Hilarious phone call just now...
A guy calls (a SS I've never heard of before) and asks if I'll take a signing at 5pm. Mind you, it's 4:40pm so I'm already inclined to say no way...when he finishes, "...and it's in Ridgecrest."
That, btw, is a town about 1 hour and 15 minutes away.
I remind him of the time, and he gets uppity saying, "But you cover the area, right? You should be able to get there in time if you cover it."
I remind him that yes, I do cover the area, but there's no possible way I could print the docs and make it there in less than 20 minutes because I was over 60 miles away from the appointment location. No possible way. Besides, I tell him, I require at least 3-4 hours notice for all of my loan signing appointments.
He says, "Please? I'll make it worth your while if you hurry... I'll pay you $100 instead of my usual $60 but it has to be at 5pm, no later."
I actually had to put the guy on hold to compose myself before I got back to him to turn him down.
I think this guy actually thought I had some kind of amazing ability to get myself there in under 20 minutes --- and that I was dumb enough to accept his "gracious" offer. Best laugh I've had in a while.

I hear ya, Marian - my 'transporter' has been in the shop
for months on end - they can't seem to find the remote molecular unscrambler ponsducing exchanger, or something.
I'm so sorry, though, for you missing out on the $60 - let alone the whopping C-Note. And, I know your're sad too, poor dear. Here: a double-chocolate brownie, or - a super margarita, or, heck, why not two of each. Such a loss, I'm so, so sorry.
[please note, laughing wiht you ]

Geez, one more thing to add to our basic equipment list...
We now also not only need a magic wand, but a transporter...?!! Time to recalculate our business overhead again...

Maybe the SS had been "outsourced" and they we calling from a foreign country? Could be?

After I stopped laughing, I wondered who the company was. Give a hint?

Re: Let me guess Pacific Documents in Los Angeles?
Im guessing its a new company on the block who obviously does not understand the dynamics of remote closings or the remote closers who do them. A great big DUH for this boy!

No, don't think it's them -
not only because since they're in CA also they probably know the area and logistics, but Marian said she'd never heard of this company - I'm sure she's heard of Pacific Documents in L.A.

I was drinking a glass of tea while reading your post. I had to clean my keyboard after I read this part: "I'll make it worth your while if you hurry... I'll pay you $100 instead of my usual $60 but it has to be at 5pm, no later."
Had to burst out laughing and the tea and my keyboard ... umm, received a good cleaning.
Thank you for the laugh Now I'm off to refill my glass of tea.
I had a call today for an approximately 140 mile r/t signing for tomorrow with a "We normally pay $60, but because of the distance I can offer you $80." When I told him that my fee would be $250 he quickly exited the phone call. LOL
The bad thing, for him, was that I actually know someone in that city and would have been glad to give him the name (since it was not a refi signing -- only about 20-30 pgs total) but he exited the call so fast I was unable to even offer him the help. I normally get $100 for the same signings from the original company (not this notary SS that called me) for a local one of these.

Good for you for not laughing out loud.
The last time I received such a call I was so caught off guard that I did laugh at the person. The caller didn't appreciate being told that it was the funniest thing I'd heard all month.

I've laughed in peoples ears...
many times, sincerely thinking they were kidding. When I didn't hear them laughing too, I said, "Are you kidding? You're kidding right?" When they say no, I just politely say, "Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you were just kidding. I really appreciate you considering me but I don't work for anything less than minimum wage." Then I say, "My fee for that is $XXX but thank you for calling."
