I was used!!
I received a call from a SS for a closing. Quoted my price and was told that my fee was what they make. I told them that my fee was firm. About 5 minutes later, I get a call back and ask if I still want the job. I said yes at my price and she accepted. The caller then says that it will be about 15 minutes before she sends the confirmation. She said that the title company would not give names and numbers until they knew that the SS had confirmed a notary. I did not hear back from her. She must have told the title company that she did have a notary (me) but then continued to shop for the lower notary which she must have found. I was the backup notary in case the caller did not find the lower price notary. So what if we did this in reverse? Take a closing, and then if we get another higher priced closing for the same hour, just leave the SS in limbo? I think not. Fortunately about 95% of my work is directly with title companies that have integrity and follow through with the process.

You're right. Two wrongs do not make a right. That is why
I generally ask 3 - 5 questions of first/second time callers of the SS. If the answers are to my satisfaction, then I will accept the assignment.
I do not like the idea of being used nor working for free. Does this process work all the time? No, but enough times to do better.

Easy Fix
<<<The caller then says that it will be about 15 minutes before she sends the confirmation.>>>
No need to feel used. I would have informed the caller from ABC company that if I receive a notary service call from LMN company within that 15 minutes and LMN company sends an immediate confirmation...*that* appointment from LMN company will be booked. If I do not receive ABC company's confirmation with X time, my calender remains open to book other appointments.
This puts ABC company on notice that the sun does not rise and set on *them* and your calender is not held hostage while they shop for a $50 notary.

Re: Easy Fix
Should read: If I do not receive ABC company's confirmation within X time (whatever timeframe you require to receive the confirmation so you can book the appointment.....for some, that's 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 6 hours, or whatever)

I have this "confirmation in 15 minutes" before
along with not receiving a confirmation hours later; then call looking for confirmation only to be told "we've been busy - I'm working on it"... not very often but it has happened.
My response to this is"Okay..that's fine - as long as you understand that until I receive a written confirmation from you the time is not booked and is open for other appointments"...I usually get the confirmation within minutes of that.
I wouldn't say you were used, Marilyn - this happens a lot lately - usually done by SS's shopping around. Read back here you'll see many who've posted they accepted assignment then someone else got job...

Not to mention the air head factor...where you call them back and say, where's me confirmation and they reply OMG I forgot to hit the send button!!!

"forgot to hit the send button"
Yeah...been there...I have "forgotten" to hit send. Actually, it's more like I have not had time to hit send.
In today's business world, I think fast typing is the #1 skill needed at almost every level.

Part of the risk of doing business w/some SS
While I agree w/everyone that until a written confirmation is in hand, there is nothing confirmed - even HAVING that confirmation doesn't always stop the shopping. Nothing more infuriating than to have a confirmed appt and be told it "cancelled". GRRRR!
I've actually had it happen where, on a Friday that was EOM for a deal confirmed 2 days in advance - when I e-mailed for an ETA on docs, I was e-mailed back "OH, sorry, forget to tell you - we found someone cheaper." SERIOUSLY?! Hope that works out good long-term, sounds like a marriage made in heaven. A SS, of course.

Re: Part of the risk of doing business w/some SS
Sometimes, after receiving a confirmation and calling the borrower to introduce yourself,....the borrower themselves will sometimes request ANOTHER notary, forcing your appointment cancellation.
This has been my experience quite a few times...Oh well.

Now this is interesting....I've never experience that
one before, which makes me curious to know why a BO would make this type of request. I suppose I could figure it out.
Some BOs prefer women notary, while others have other types of preferences.

My guess would be demographics..not so much gender
has been my experience sort of Carmichael vs Land Park. I don trip everyone has a right to choose who they want to close their loans IMO as long as it's not TC/LO/SS.

Some borrowers get upset when told ...
... that they need to have a witness in addition to the Notary Signing Agent and that the NSA isn't going to bring one. There are times that another NSA will actually have a spouse sign as "witness" when the NSA returns home!
Sometimes the borrower does want a woman rather than a man. Who knows what goes through the borrower's mind?
