Seriously... don't do that!

Okay, this is just a bit of an open letter to the Notary who I saw this afternoon. If you're going to plaster your business name and number all over your vehicle (which is cool, btw) then don't go doing stupid stuff for people to notice and will associate your business with your stupidity.

Driving north on the 14 freeway heading to Los Angeles today, I pass an SUV that appeared to have an impaired driver. She was all over the road... doing about 70. Nice. So I get as far over as I can and decide to pass as soon as I can... as are all of the other cars on the road.

Then I see that it's one of the local mobile notaries... her business name and phone numbers in BIG WHITE PRINT, filling the back window of her SUV.

...and she's doing her make-up. Frown At 70MPH on a busy LA freeway and you've got an eyebrow pencil to your face.

It may seem petty, but I will forever remember that act of stupidity when people ask for a Mobile notary in her area.

It's all I can do to keep my speed under 65, not do my makeup or fuss with my hair, given we have CHP officers and motorcycle cops every 4 or 5 miles apart along the 101. Once you're stopped, there are no warnings, only big assed tickets that make your notary revenue for the day pale in comparison, so what's the point of being out there taking these kind of stupid risks.

Increasing the odds for a major wipeout and perhaps end of life for people not taking responsibility on the roads! Whether a notary or not!

No kidding, right? Out where I live, at least our speed limit is upped to 70. Wide open desert roads help a bit. Those LEOs manage to hide everywhere. Especially this weekend. It's a MEP because of the holiday which means they're extra pissy.

I was just astonished to see this... she was really all over the road. My husband was with me, too, and he was about to call 911 to report a drunk driver when we noticed she was just doing her makeup. She's lucky everyone else on the road was watching her. One slip and she would have poke her eye out.

sounds like she was already blind. Signs on cars here all have bullet holds in them.

"One slip and she would have poke her eye out."

If she was lucky... If not, as someone else alluded to, she could have gotten herself killed or taken out someone else! I confess I may push the limits on these things from time to time, but only when I'm stopped at a red light. If the car is moving, the mascara wand gets put down and the cell phone is on the seat! Wink

I agree, Marian, that she probably couldn't have worse advertising for herself...

I'm totally guilty of doing things at the stoplight... not makeup, though. I'm too blind to put makeup on in the car. But I do read my email and text messages at a stoplight. Apparently, that's illegal, too. I know of TWO people who have been cited by cops after getting caught texting while stopped. One was at a red light in heavy traffic and had a lot of time to wait. The other was stuck at a railroad crossing. And, this particular RR crossing is an interesting one (in Mojave, CA) where the trains actually stop across the highway because they're switching out. When that happens, you might as well kick back because you'll be there for 10-30 minutes. No joke.

But when I'm actually driving...especially at high speeds on a busy freeway? Yeah... not so much.

Yesterday six motorists received tickets in the parking lot of one of my local title companies. These people were on their cells phones. Tickets are $188 per for the first, and it jumps to over 400 for second and on and on...A Zero Tolerance Level, I heard the motorcycle cop tell one motorist. I was watching all of this from my second floor conference room where I was signing one client after another this crazy month end.

They mean business here. Today they were all over it again!

How about this, Marian. Since you know who she is, why not

send her an anonymous copy of the movie "Seven Pounds" with Will Smith. Maybe she'd take the hint BEFORE she kills a bunch of people. Cops used to stop people for "reckless driving" all the time. I don't even hear about that anymore.
It is scarey how completely careless people have become about driving--eating, drinking coffee, shaving, putting on makeup, talking on the phone, texting, etc. Someone here in VA made an issue lately about it being way too easy to get a drivers license. We all know that vehicle accidents are still the #1 leading cause of death.

Good idea. I always honk my horn when I see someone texting (it scares the hell out of um'), letting them know I see what they're doing. Heck, It's my life they are putting in jeopardy also. Honk for safety I always say!

Heh... I've never seen that movie so I don't know the reference.

My husband took a photo of her car, though. He tried to get it of her with the makeup, but it was too difficult to get at that speed (I was driving, not him!). The photo we did get shows the back of her car clear as day. Not that I needed it, though. When I saw the back of her car with her business name, I knew exactly who it was. Had the one with her showing her putting on the makeup as we passed come out, I would have set it to her with a note.

BTW, I don't think she's a member here... and I'm pretty certain she's one of the ones that takes super low offers. All the power to her... I guess. I just wish she'd do it a bit more safely.

I that movie he is a very successful businessman, out for a

special night with his beautiful wife. His blackberry goes off, he's briefly distracted, ends up killing 7 people, including his wife. He then goes about planning his redemption, since he can't live with what he did. A real reality check for times like these. Frown
