This Makes Me Furious!
This Saturday morning my bank called me for one of its clients who needed one document notarized. The banker said the client had problems getting into my office and I told him it was because the office was closed. I offered to come to them as a mobile notary. I verified which bank branch and told them I could be there in 30 minutes and the fee(s). They said okay that I'd be there.
I got to the branch near my office to learn it wasn't that branch. I called the banker who told me it was on the other side of the city and I couldn't believe it. So, I decided to rebound and told them I could be there in 10 minutes. I took off and was in transit when the banker called back 5 minutes later to tell me the client just told him she didn't have an I.D. with her and they didn't need my services. The banker then told me they would call me again if they needed my services in the future as if I was supposed to except that as a remedy.
So I thought a bit about what they put me through that morning and slowly became furious. They had no consideration whatsoever. A mobile service can only be effective if people don't take advantage, especially a bank. Now we all have situations where clients don't have ID's and most people except those in hospitals or senior homes usually have ID's.
I didn't buy the banker's story that suddenly they didn't need me. I figured they found someone closer, such as the UPS down the street.
Don't let them get away with this kind of thing! This isn't a pizza delivery service. I told the banker my fee and the reasons why I was going to charge them and he said he'd pay it and to send my invoice. We'll see if they pay up.

One of the reasons that one of the questions I ask when confirming any signing is to make sure the signer has an unexpired ID that meets requirements for my state.

Adding: And, if I start my car for this assignment, full
fee applies thereafter, payment due upon receipt of invoice.

I require upfront payment in cash only for PITA appointments. I can usually tell during the initial phone conversation that the appointment will be a PITA.
When people put you through the ringer, collect the cash upfront before you notarize because after all is said and done, they forgot to bring their checkbook, or forgot to stop by the ATM or forgot to get cash or forgot the ID (after you've informed them 12 different times to bring current, valid ID)....or some other BS excuse.
Get CASH and collect it before notarizing - or walk!!!
