I accepted a loan Mod for last Saturday near my home for $45.00. I arrived and spent at least 20 min. with them becuase he could not find his driver's license. When we were set to go ahead, I opened the docs only to find that the SS had sent me the incorrect docs (for folks in a completely different state). You're right, I did not look at them before I left, just printed and drove to their place. I set up a second appt with them for this evening at 7:00PM. I was sent the correct docs and told that they would approve a $17.50 trip and print fee for the error, plus the original $45.00. What???? Am I wrong here: doesn't this deserve a whole new fee?

I think we should always check the docs for some quick and easy indications of correctness in regard to names, address of the property, address of the signing location, dates on docs, and the purpose identified by the scheduler. We're certainly not required to proof-read all docs, but a cursory view can only help us and the sender. jmho........

IMO, no. Had you looked prior to either printing or leaving your home you would have been able to either obtain the correct set of docs or called off the signing until you received the correct ones.
Since there were mistakes on both ends (yours and the SS) I would go forward and use this as a learning experience. At least they are offering something for the trip and printing of the first appointment. Some will not even offer that regardless of any mistakes on their end.

Great that you're getting a print fee for a loan modification..I've never heard of that, as these docs are 10 pages or less. If it's the standard print fee for a loan package, I would be fine with that along with a trip fee, and the original fee of $45, especially if it was close to your home.
Yes, it was their fault for sending you the incorrect documents.... But, we all know that we should do a cursory review of the docs to ensure we have the right set of docs....I've grabbed the wrong set of docs for a signing when I printed out multiple sets for the day, so I needed to reschedule and go back on my dime.....I apologized to the borrowers for their inconvenience, but it could have been easily remedied, had I looked at the docs 1 last time before heading out!
Make sure when you sign again that the borrower has a COPY of their identification so that the borrowers don't waste another 20 minutes of your time....make that request over the phone when you reschedule. Good luck!

Waiting until you arrive at the clients home to open and review the documents is never a wise thing to do. You just never know what kind of other special instructions may have been in there for you follow. In this case it would have saved you a lot of time and trouble by simply reviewing the documents before you left the house.

I have at times been sent the wrong docs. But, in starting to print I have noticed that they were for wrong town or state. So, at least they are offering print and trip fee . Like someone else said, some other company would not have paid anything. At least it is close by!

Regardless of how pressed you may be for time, you should ALWAYS review the docs you've printed before heading out the door. That doesn't mean you have to sit down and read them all, but it would be a good idea to *at least* make sure the docs you're carrying have something to do with the people who are going to sign them. We're talking a minute or two at most...
Had you caught the error when you should have, you wouldn't have wasted the time with these people and the reprint fee would be more than fair. This may sound harsh, but you really can't blame the SS for your lack of attention to detail. Chalk it up to lessons learned, and move on.

It's bad enough to not have reviewed the docs before leaving, but during the 20 mins the borrower took to search for his ID, you didn't bother opening the package at *that* time either? You went from the frying pan and into the fire.

I have a tip to help avoid such an error.
I never trust the scheduler for the correct address - I have had transposed numbers, misspelled street names, wrong towns, etc. I use the HUD for my MapQuest directions; it is always the first thing I look at in any package.

I had a signing last Friday, when the company sent me the docs, the header had a different last name. Before I called, I opened the docs any way, and it was the correct borrower with the wrong header. I started printing them, and the company called me, to tell me they had sent me the wrong docs. I told him it was the correct docs but the header was wrong. He said thank you for checking. It only takes a few seconds to check our docs before we head out. I always go over the address with borrowers before I head out, and sometimes the street names and numbers are wrong.
