Attempted closing last evening
Had been scheduled for a few days about 1/2 hour away from me. No problems whatsoever with docs, Etc. Mr. Borrower called several times making sure I was coming. Also texted me to come earlier if I wanted to. No issues, have had that before also. As you may know we had a nasty storm out here AGAIN that has downed ALOT of trees and power lines including the poles. Follow his last text on how to get to his house, GPS is saying the same so no problems. Last sentence of his text says "just drive through the barracades on my street". Again no problem, this area that I am going to is very, very woodsy and little one lane stone bridges that flood easily. Sometimes they forget to take down the road closed and detour signs. But of course I am proceeding with caution at this point. I get maybe an 1/8 of a mile past the barracades and it looks like a freekin bomb went off on his block! Not only HUGE trees down but power lines and POLES with the lines draping across the street 2 feet from the car. The poles are 3/4 tilted into the street! Now I do know that they problably do not have power BUT! What about the damn poles that could let loose at any time on my car! I turn around get on the main road call Mr. Borrower tell him N/G need to reschedule when your street is safe OR would you like to meet me on the main road at a diner, my car (done that a few times) etc. No good for him he has children. Call the company that hired me, they call back and she can't believe he never said anything to the condition of his street/area. I also forwarded his directions about "just go through the barracade" she texted me back "unreal". Be safe out there people! Seems nobody gives a rat's a-- about us!!!

Boy you've got that right! In 2009 I went to a closing after a major snowfall - I have a 4WD and I was able to get there but I'm telling you I went the extra mile. When I emailed my successful closing confirmation to the SS, I didn't even receive a response, much less a "thank you". UGH!

In February this year, I was asked to close 2 back-to-back at a bank location. No problem; agreed to fee for 2 closings in same location.
This was when we were expecting the first round of a blizzard. Figured since I was going to a bank, the employees got in and out, so no issues--I thought.
Well, that blizzard starts in the morning; the closings are set for 3:00 and 4:00. I'm driving a crossover that handles okay, but the others on the streets are having issues. I contact the bank to let them know I'm to meet a signer, but that I'm stuck in traffic. I finally get there at 3:15. The borrower has left!
So, I ask the person who I've been speaking with on the phone (who is not the loan officer who had gone home) if I can contact the 2nd signer to see if they can come sooner, as the branch was preparing to close early. They have a child and would rather not go out in the mess. Since they are only a few blocks from the bank, I start out to their house--a second location.
My car gets stuck in a snow drift on an incline and I paid a guy with a tow chain $25 to get me out. I don't get to their place until 4:30. They sign and I contact my contractor about what to do about the 1st signer. "He'll meet you at the bank tomorrow."
So, the second round of blizzard comes overnight. My husband decides to drive me, and we start out in plenty of time to get to the bank--so I thought. I keep in contact with the loan officer, who says he'll "keep the signer there until I can get there."
I finally drag myself into the bank, the signer and loan officer are there. We go through the closing, and the signer leaves. I wrap myself back up, take the package to drop off, but the carrier has shut down because of the blizzard. (I use the airport drop, as they are usually there later.)
Anyway, I've now visited 2 locations on 2 days for a fee I lowered because it was one location all at once.
No thank you; no, can we give you more for your extra efforts. No extra print fee for 1st signer doc redo. Not even more jobs since then. And I had to wait longer than usual for payment!
I'm evaluating how I'll handle jobs during this year's projected bad weather.

Agree w/Hrd..
Once took me 2 hrs to get to a closing only 20min away from me in the snow cause I could only drive about 5miles an hour. The roads were so bad I almost slid right into a STOP sign. After that, I now say HELL NO!! I'll keep them scheduled and see what the weather is like and how far the closings are but if the weather turns too bad it just isn't worth the stress, aggravtion and risk of injury. In the end, no one really cares that you went that extra mile for them anyway.

I totally agree and I will turn down closings when we are expecting to get a major snowfall. Sometimes I will have a few closings scheduled a week in advance and then when the signing day comes, the snow hits. If the location is close, I will do my best to get out with my 4WD and do the closing - but I won't be traveling far I can tell you that. No going out of my immediate area.

I would rent sled dogs and personally stitch together a parka for the pleasure of closing a loan in a blizzard. It was over 100 degrees for more than 80 days this summer in Austin, with 110 degrees not uncommon. Hottest summer on record. You could get heatstroke at 3 a.m. Rattlesnakes were missing strikes because they were blinded by sweat. Dogs learned very quickly not to pee on the sidewalk, because they got burned by the resultant steam. Rain is so scarce we're going to have to have special sessions in school to teach children how to operate umbrellas -- if they are ever needed again.
Bring on the blizzards!

I certainly don't think anyone should go out in major snowstorms....It is not that you can't handle your vehicle, it is the other drivers, some who are not prepared as you may be.
Same for other kinds of storms/damage, etc.
