Things I learned by contacting KS and MO Sec of State Notary Commission Departments:
1) The top of the Notary Cert is for the venue, as in "where your feet are planted" at the time you do the notarization. (Everyone should at least know this).
2) The bottom of the cert, after the notary signature line, is for commission information in case it differs from "where your feet are planted." So if you are commissioned in Clay County, MO and the notarization is in Jackson County, MO, and there is a line for "County" below the signature line, you would put in "Clay" NOT Jackson. If your commission just shows the state on it with no mention of a county, you would put in the county "where your feet are planted" but only because you should NOT leave anything blank on the cert, and because by default you are of course commissioned in that county as well.
3) If there is a line below the notary signature for "county acting in" you put the venue county, even though it is redundant as it already appears at the top of the cert.
4) If your notary seal includes wording that was OPTIONAL, such as mine for KS that includes "my appointment expires on ____" this information does not ALSO need to be written in below the signature line even though the handbook says to do this. It says that because some people may have not included the optional wording in their seal. ANYTHING already showing within your seal does NOT have to be repeated elsewhere on the cert unless there is a line for it.
5) Both commission departments did not appear to be busy and were very happy to talk with me and help me out (so don't be afraid to contact yours with any questions you may have).
