I'd keep the dell and return the hp's. Nothing but bad luck for me. Toshiba's are tops for me.

My first HP always owned Dells

PC guys said HP have good products, for 399 it could blow up after warranty and I'm still ahead of the game.

Re: My first HP always owned Dells

Isn't it strange? I guess personal experience rules. I had a Toshiba laptop and it was a piece of junk. Never owned a Dell but have never heard anyone speak well of them. I have had an HP for about 3 years and it has been great. Also, had good luck with a Gateway. I've been shopping too now for another. What to do...what to do??? Guess I'll take the plunge on something based on price/features and hope for the best.

By the way, all. Regardless of your choice in computer brands, December 31st ends the IRS provision to deduct 100% of business equipment expense in the year in which it was purchased. After this year it goes back to the depreciation over several years method. As the saying goes, "consult your tax professional for specifice information."

Let me guess...a salesman gave you that info?

Even after the Special Depreciation Allowance expires, you still have the option to use the Section 179 expense deduction, which has been around for many years. The most you can deduct in 2012 is $125,000. Don't know about you, but I'm not planning to spend anywhere near that amount on depreciable equipment.

I recently picked up a Toshsiba w/a great deal from Office Max. It was reg. $599.99 - $170 off one day only deal=$429.99, then I had $60 in MaxPerks Rewards=369.99. I usually buy anything electronic at Costco, but this was one fantastic deal. BTW, I'm not a big HP fan.

Does anyone have an opinion on Lenovo laptops? Micro Center has some pretty good deals now too.

Re: Lenovo and HP

My experience with computers, as a user, goes back to C64 days. That being said, I used to have HP desktops exclusively, until I got a lemon that had widely known issues. A call to the PRES. of HP's office (direct number provided by fellow lemon owner) got it replaced with a dif. model. Number worked for a relative with an HP laptop that Cust. Serv. couldn't/wouldn't fix. I haven't/won't own an HP since. HP nowadays keeps shooting themselves in the foot, witness the late August decision to get out of the hardware business, ( Desktop/laptop/tablets), now partially reversed by a new CEO. Previous CEO only lasted 1 year. I would certainly stay away for at least a couple years, until HP figures out what HP wants to do/be again.

I or my immediate family have had 5 Tohiba lappys and been very satisfied, just stay away from the lowest end "student" laptops a they are usually underpowered.

RE: Lenovo (FKA IBM). I have had the pleasure of buying/using 2 T-series IBM Thinkpad laptops. Both off lease, IBM factory refubished. LIGHT (14 " less than 4 lbs!), fast, WELL thought out business machines. Easy to add memory, replace hard drive. BOTH EXTERNALLY accessable slots! Quick and easy. Innerds easily accessable when I upgraded the wireless. Slots/parts/ports where they should be. There's a reason they have a premium price, they are a Cadillac IMHO. From my limited experience, I doubt you'd go wrong here. If you're not in a hurry, I'm sure there will be good buys at the end of the month, but Microcenter has a pretty good return policy, so go for it if you want. YMMV and good luck!

Lenovo is a Chinese company.

I avoid buying Chinese. It's almost impossible I know but I do the best I can.

Not sure don't think any computers built in USA

Lenovo was IBM in the past, not sure if they still are. My very first laptop was a IBM think pad over priced compared to others at the time. Went to Dells after that and now first HP.

No one fixes things anymore?

A hard drive went out on my Dell. No reason to replace the computer because of the computer being out of date, so I replaced the hard drive with an aftermarket 300gb unit for 89 bucks plus tax. Yes, you have to know how to re-load your operating system. Most major brand laptops of the PC kind are pretty generic (not so Apple) a couple of screws, slide out, slide in. Plug and play. The most expensive part of a laptop is the screen.
