Interesting conversation at the UPS store yesterday...
I had just come from a signing. I had forgotten my mini stapler so I couldn't staple the check to the HUD. At the store I asked to use the stapler. The clerk replied that people are not supposed to put metal objects in the UPS envelope because it screws up something and won't scan properly. At the very least, the companies will be billed a higher amount if metal is detected inside the envelope.

I have had to send out packages at my own expense. I have produced the airbill on line. UPS gives me the price at that time. I always include a medium size binder clip to hold the package together. I have never had my price adjusted upward because of this. Is this a new policy?

I have no idea if this is a new policy.

I always use a binder clip, and or a paper clip to hold the check on top.

Old Rule just not enforced
Rule is that ONLY papers may be put in a letter envelope. This excludes staples, binder clips, etc. I owned a mail and parcel center for 16 years and never once was a package sent back or up charged because it contained paper clips. The purpose is to prevent people from using letter envelopes to ship parcels, keys, clothing or other non letter items. All other items should go in a pack or a box.

I take envelopes to the Fedex office, and I use those brown 9x11 envelopes with the clasps on them. I have to seal the envelope with tape as the Fedex guy said that the clasps get caught in the scanner and will tear the envelope. Post office told us the same thing. So I always tape the envelopes now instead of using the metal clasps - as soon as I have used the 1.1/2boxes of the envelopes I have now I will buy those that just seal instead of the ones with the clasps.

That's very interesting indeed.
I always use the clasp envelopes and binder clips and/or paper clips also. Have never been told this has any effect on shipments.

Never heard of this. I do not staple but use a clip or binder clip. I will ask my UPS store today about this. Sounds weird to me.

Scanning for content in packages? Don't think so.
UPS and FedX don't scan to check contents of packages. They could care less what is in the package, unless they have a tip about shipping fake toner or the DEA dogs stop and sit down in front of a package as they (the dogs) are walking among the packages. And charging a higher fee simply because there is metal in the envelope? That would have to be metal heavy enough to cause the envelope to go over the 1 pound envelope limit. But I'll check with my UPS resources (my son) and at FedX (hubby) anyway.
The only issue I have heard about in the past with clips in envelopes is when the clip makes the envelope bulge or become so odd shaped that the package would have problems going down the belt.
