Non paying companies
What can we do as notaries when a company wont pay? Especially living in another state from the company.

Check your state's collection laws and small claims procedures/jurisdiction/laws...
Prudently done prior to accepting contract work with out-of-state companies whose payment terms are payment AFTER services are rendered rather than at time of service....IOW knowing options in advance
And read here - search - been discussed extensively

There is virtually not a thing that you can practically do. Keep good records. If it’s a Signing Service that hasn’t paid you, call the Title Company/Lender that hired the SS and complain. If it’s a Title Company lodge a complaint with their States regulatory agency. If you have not worked for the company before, NEVER do more than one job for them until they pay you. Check the companies out here on Signing Central BEFORE you take the job. If they have less that a sterling record say no. If you have said yes, check them out here and if they are deadbeats call and cancel (they are used to it). If they are in your state/area you can try Small Claims Court, but most of these thieves are judgment proof (have no assets) Read here and learn. JMO

Agree with Linda and Les and will add...
Even if you win the judgement in small claims, collection is nearly impossible.
I go to S/C EVERYTIME I get an assignment. If I'm not at home at the time, it's the first thing I do when I return. If I don't feel comfortable with what I read I do as Les suggested, call them back and tell them why.
If I'm not sure, I go to comments and click on the envelopes and email the person making the comment. Doing this has saved me many, many, many headaches.
If they're not listed at all, go go to the BBB in the company's area, check their rating and see if any complaints have been filed. I had to learn business and emotions mix like water and oil if a good outcome is what you want. IMO

Oh heavens, that company does indeed have such a bad rep. Mr. Safir works for the title company (Genuine Title) - they have their own in-house signing service called Safir Signing. If it were me, I would contact the state reglatory agency of Genuine Title (MD Bureau of Insurance?) and file a formal complaint for failure to fulfill its contractual obligations in a real estate transaction. Past behavior demonstrates that Genuine is fully aware of how Mr. Safir operates on behalf of the company.
