Earliest Recorded Fake ID?
Goatskin.
Huh?
"Perhaps the earliest recorded perpetration of a fraud by an impostor is recorded in the Book of Genesis of the Old Testament. The 27th chapter of Genesis speaks of the ancient prophet Isaac intending to confer upon his eldest son, Esau, a blessing or endowment. n3 The elderly Isaac was blind. n4 He asked Esau to hunt for venison, his favorite meat, for the important celebratory meal in preparation of the conveyance of the blessing. n5 Rebekah, Isaac's wife, overheard this and conspired with her other son, Jacob..."
Anyhow...the short version:
Isaac was old and blind. He had two sons, Jacob and Esau. Esau was a hairy man, Jacob was smooth.
So, Mom helps Jacob get the inheritance by tying goatskin on his arms and neck. When Isaac passed along Esau's birthright, it was Jacob he passed it to. He was tricked by the goatskin. If a notary had been there to witness the transaction, s/he would have checked Jacob's ID. I am pretty sure that s/he would have seen that the goatskin was a ruse and stopped the transaction.
(This concept was not mine. I read it in an article by Peter Van Alstyne, lawyer and notary authority.)
