Forum name change

Hey folks -

I moved from NY to TX last month, and just got my TX notary commission, so I'm back in the game... Griff was kind enough to change my records; MikeC/NY is now MikeC/TX.

Note to His Hughness: Yeah, I know you think that a Yankee moving here would lower the IQ of the state (and I could say something about that, but will hold my tongue), but look on the bright side - Texas now has one more liberal than it did a month ago...

How did you manage that? I have been trying to get my name from EileenMO to EileenHI for a year now.....

Boggles the mind, doesn't it? Honestly - people move all

the time, I just don't get why the accomodation is selective.

Sheesh.

It's not selective, Susie - I think you just have to catch them at the right time, or at least have a subject line in your email that might catch their attention. I didn't do anything special to get their attention.

I just sent them a couple of emails; I think they may be a bit overwhelmed at times, so timing and subject line may have something to do with it. If you can't get a response by email, a phone call would definitely help. The staff here does respond, but they seem to have a lot on their plate so you have to be patient.

Welcome to what will be God's retirement home if he ever finishes with it.

A few things you need to know:

If a couple of guys in rugged hats and scuffed jeans tell you those elongated green things with the stems are Texas cherries, don't believe them. They are called "jalapenos," and they are called that because calling them "Great Balls of Smoking Buzzard Fat Gimmee a Glass of Water No Just Forget the Water Get Away From the Sink" was way too cumbersome.

If you picnic in a cow pasture, remember, before you spread the blanket on the ground: 1) The grey powery things are fire ant mounds. Fire ants object to intruders -- vigorously; 2) The big brown circular mounds are where the cows have been; the brown mounds are reminders of their visit. You do not want to take any of <their> reminders home with you as <your> reminder; 3) The green things with clumps of three leaves are poison oak, poison sumac, or poison ivy; any of the three can be beneficial if you have also inadvertently spread your blanket over a fire ant mound, because the itch from the resultant rash will take your mind off the fire ant stings; 4) The bugs with the long tail curved over their backs do not bite, but you may want to pay attention to the other end; and 5) The poisonous Texas snakes are the copperhead, coral snake, moccasin, and the rattlesnake, which comes in many varieties…oh, never mind. Just stay close to a hospital and keep 911 keyed in on your cell phone.

Glad to have you. There are three things you have to do within 30 days here in Texas. You have to get a Texas drivers license. You have to go to the Alamo. And you have to learn an Aggie joke and tell it to Brenda.

Thanks so much for the advice.

We didn't have cow pastures in my part of NY - we already progressed to the 21st century, so all available land was already developed. It's nice to move back in time a century or two, and I will keep your advice in mind if I ever happen to stumble across a cow pasture... Are there signs to identify them?

"Glad to have you. There are three things you have to do within 30 days here in Texas. You have to get a Texas drivers license. You have to go to the Alamo. And you have to learn an Aggie joke and tell it to Brenda."

1 - TX driver license: done deal, got it a few days after I arrived here. Seriously. It was my way of accepting my new home.
2 - Alamo: got that on my list of things to do, and I'll be checking out the basement to find Peewee Herman's bicycle....
3 - Aggies: where I come from, aggies are marbles, so I have no idea what you're talking about... I don't have any marble jokes... No, wait, maybe I do. Two marbles go into a bar...

Also, Hugh forgot to mention: Those brown mounds that indicate where the cows have been, don't kick one on a hot day.

Culture shock? Heck, I'm still trying to get used to not being able to watch the NY Jets play every week... I haven't even gotten to the "culture" part yet...

You really don't understand, Mike. In Texas, football IS culture.

Yeah, I'm starting to learn that - the whole Friday Night Lights thing is impressive; there's a high school football stadium here that is better than some college stadiums I've seen...

Re: What do you take for the culture shock?

As part of your indoctrination into Texas culture, you are herewith ordered to watch a few episodes of Friday Night Lights, a drama about ficticious Dillon, Texas Panthers.

You can download from hulu.com. There will be a test.

Re: Welcome to Texas, Mike!

Mike, you wont be sorry. You'll hear some say or read a bumper sticker now and then that goes, "I wasn't born in Texas but I got here as soon as I could." I did 20 years ago and have never looked back. Great place to live and work. Welcom. Enjoy.

Re: Welcome to Texas, Mike!

Thanks Joe. It's been great so far - except for the road construction around DFW airport. I'm used to major road construction, but at least in NY the roads stay in the same place... The roads here are like the staircases in the Harry Potter movies...
