Nations Signature Service
I accepted a signing from them for $100.00. The location was only 8 miles from my house so I was thinking good deal bc, I conducted a signing earlier that day while the couple was on there lunch break and we finished in 30 minutes so I was feeling good and having a great day. I normally travel up to 60 miles for I signings so I am really happy when they are in my hometown and close to my house. So I thought I would be out of there witin an hour. I should have known it was too good to be true. I received the documents and the packet was 139 pages with faxback. I called the SS and stated that was a large packet and I will have to increase my fee. She said she doesn't know the packet size beforehand and if I increased my fee I would not get many calls from them and they don't pay extra for large packets. I told her I am so tired of hearing that from SS. Do they not realize how many services are out there. I told her I work for plenty services and I am busy enough so your company will not make or break me. I told her I felt taken advantage of and I did not appreciate the pages and pages of instructions. I also informed her that if I had not already confirmed with the customer I would not conduct this closing. I told her to please take me out of their database bc I will never work for them again. So since I made this declaration I wanted to make sure the signing went smoothly and I quadrupled checked the docs so they would not have any reason to deduct from my fee. Long story short, the wife did not want to sign her name on the documents the way it was printed bc they have since been married. So we had to call the SS and LO to get an OK on the oversigning. So my 1 hour siging turned into a 2.5 hour signing over the calling back and forth and waiting for call backs. Upside the couple were tremendously nice people. The the only reason I did not cancel the signing on my end. Sorry the post is so long, I am still venting.

I will not accept any more signing from Nations Signature and I wanted to post this as a forewarning to anyone who decides to work with them.

Oh and to check signing central first. I feel stupid. I could use the excuse that I was so busy and did not have time to check but that would not be true. I have internet on my phone so there is no excuse....LOL!

They are the worst of the worst. I have had to cancel plenty of times after confirming an appointment. If the terms and conditions are not amiable to how I conduct business, I'm not going to handle it. It's as simple as that. Let them call the borrower and talk about how they tried to shaft me. That's not my problem.

Thank you for the info. I thought I was being irrational but I was very upset and I do not get upset for no reason. I felt the excuses the young lady were giving me were very deceptive. I don't understand this.

When the package is smaller,do you call and reduce your fee?
No? You don't call and say "hey, I was expecting 100 pages, but it's only 70, so let's cut my fee by $25." Then if the package is larger, you shouldn't call and say you want more. You set a fee that incorporates what you think is generally fair for an average size loan package. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
And you're talking about Nations Signature Closers, right? I've never heard of Nations Signature Service. It's important when you post about a company that you get the name right. Too many have similar names and you risk calling out the wrong company. If it's NSC, they used to be good, but they jumped the shark long ago. Still, calling to change your fee because the package was thicker than you thought it would be is not a move that will make any of your clients happy.

Agree with you Al.....I set my fee to make allowances for the variety of circumstances/situations I will have to face.
State your policy up front and you won't have any surprises IMO.

Audrey,
Some lenders packages are larger than others. I've done signings with packages of only about 30 or 40 pages. I've also done signings with packages of 150 pages. It all evens out you make out well on some and just barely make it on others.
Expect 100 pages and if it's less, great. If the package is more, Oh well. Or you could set your fee at the call by saying if the package is over 100 pages I charge an additiona fee of $xx

This is a typical problem with people new to this business. If the person is not new, then they aren't doing many signings. You set your fee and you live with what you quoted them over the phone. If you accept a signing from Shmoe Notary Services for a set fee, then that's it. You don't call back and whine about the size of the package. I get packages that run from 72 pages to 168 (thank goodness they aren't all that size) but it just comes with the territory, like everyone says. There's nothing wrong with being new, but there is something wrong if you can't even learn - especially when you have this wealth of information (and some ignorant blather) and the Signing Central to help you out. There are many other resources available - LEARN or perish. This is not a hobby, it's a profession.
On occasion I get a large package - that's life. You live and (hopefully) learn. Smart notaries know what lenders are using what title/notary services and actually keep notes. I do. I know when there is an idiotic package coming at me with two notes, two deeds of trust and four TILs and three complete 1003s to sign. Last week I had NINE 1003's to sign for three signers on one loan. More paper. Charged them $25 more and they went with it. Either quote a higher price or don't accept the signing. You don't call back and cry about it.
Most neophyte notaries just dumbly accept whatever some person tells them over the phone, they don't ask questions, and then they post a bunch of jibber-jabber about how they were taken advantage of. If you're not smart enough to run a notary business, you should go to work for McDonalds - then again..........even they may not take you.

I had a surprise package of 190 pages 2 weeks ago. I grumbled to myself but said nothing. I am just happy it came in on time and did not delay me for the following appointment.
