Computer problem: making noises

I think from the fan at the top of the tower. I gave it a good cleaning, but still noisy though not as much. Is this possibly indicative of further problem?

Ideas? Thoughts?
TIA

My money would be on the cooling fan. Next would be the hard drive. Any computer guru could probably tell just by holding the phone up to the computer. 2 very different noises.

In any case, not a big deal since you are backed up. The cooling fan is a ten dollar or less part. You can also get some very nice hard drives for under $150.00. Or a cheapie for $89. Unless you want an excuse for a new computer. Smile

I think that before you go out and buy a new computer, it might be worth taking the side case off the computer to see where the noise is coming from. If perhaps it is the fan, it really is pretty easy to put a new one in. There probably is a store hopefully near you that sells computer parts or, if you go online you might be able to get one and have it overnighted to you. I don't think they are expensive but if you send me a PM with the make and model of computer I can help look for a replacement fan.

Good advise, Frank.

It is also a nice thing to see when others reach out like Frank is offering to help. Way to go Frank! Smile

Turn on a radio and turn up the volume when on the computer. The noise will "go away". That's what I do in my car when I hear extra noises. Works like a charm. Hope this helps. Wink

@ Glenn: I'll go for the fan too, since I took the sides off and can practically "see" the noise. I don't need excuses for new computer - mine is XP, doing fine and I'm ready to retire to Smartphone usage once I am able to figure the printing aspect and forget the box on the desk. Just have to make-do until then.

@Frank: Sweet offer - thank you. This will be third fan for this equipment, but cheap enough maintenance overall.

@MM: resident teenager! That is the ostrich method for sure. You do keep us laughing though. I thank you for this. . . erases the "care wear" lines.

I feel less at a loss now and more confident in my decision it is the fan. Thank you all...you are the best bunch ever.
