FEES
I just became a notary again after a 2 year absent. I was wondering what is the going rate to charge for doing documents. I understand all about charging for printing faxes, mileage, etc. What is the base fee to start with? I live in Calif.

I’d charge what you use to charge. I doubt if you can get more, although expenses and total cost of doing business has gone up, the fees offered have mostly gone down probably because there are many willing to work for less. JMO

I don't know if I would tell you to charge what you use to. Are you a $50 notary when it comes to loan docs? Sorry I don't know anything about you. I am closing very few loans as there are very few to close plus we have notaries that come from 40 miles or more outside this area willing to close a loan for 50 bucks or 75 for edocs. Is that you?
Most of my work is general notary work. Here, our fee is pretty much limited by law plus what we feel we should charge for a travel fee. Travel fees were already discussed at length. The orange search button is your friend.

Agreed with above posts...
As Glenn mentioned please don't use your fee's if they were typically below the $xxx mark.
Not only have those fees degraded the industry, but people are really working for less than minimum wage after overhead, IMO. In fact, with the rise in overhead costs, we are suckers paying THEM to give us that minimum wage whilst they are in the Republican tax break bracket...lol..not politics, just opinion...lmao
Not expressing political views as the above may be contradictory to my position...tee hee

sorry but I will not start my car for a $50.00 fee. I live in Calif. and I don't do lowball paying jobs. If someone wants tod take a job for $50.00 or less they are only cutting their throat. They might as well go on welfare they would get more. Why invest in all the equipment and time and then do a job for a lowball price.

Perhaps - but how many ask "What do you pay?" instead
of simply saying, "I charge...."?
I don't feel it is up to them to tell me what they pay - they need to counter my charge if they are so inclined. Otherwise, move on; discussion over.
These schedulers have a job to do - I can't see wasting their time - they have a hard enough row to hoe without me adding to their rocky road.

Re: Perhaps - but how many ask "What do you pay?" instead
I usually ask, "What are you offering?"
As far as easing the rocky road of the schedulers, if they are working for a company, getting paid by the hour to flip through their database or Google for a notary in a particular area, then I'm sorry, I won't. I'm bearing the costs of doing business and don't get paid until I complete a service. Then I have to wait for 30 days or more to receive my earned payment.
The schedulers who are employees will receive a paycheck regardless of effort. And usually no less than 2 weeks after the date they call me.
