How embarassing

I've performed over two dozen signings since March and this is the first time the signing company has called me back to go back to the borrower and correct a document.

I've been getting in the habit of pre-filling out my journal once I print the docs and go to the assigment and at the signing, each time I have them sign the document, they then sign my journal, I fill out the verbiage then apply my stamp and so forth.

The other night, I was at at signing, and the first document to be notarized, the deed of trust, I apparently neglected to notarize, and when the signing company called today, I was certain they had the wrong person. I've never done that. In fact, I've caught myself when in the past when I forget to notarize a doc and go immediately back to it.

Sure enough, they sent a scan copy of the DOT not notarized. Signing company wants me to go back out and re-notarize.

I'm so embarassed and the lady who I notarized for was telling me she had previous bad experiences with NSA's who had to keep going back to her to redo things.

::Facepalm::

Well, everyone of us has made an error from time to time. The thing to do is take responsibility, fix it and apologize then move on. Seems like you are ready to do that. You might offer to pay the shipping cost for the document in question.

Don't beat yourself up too much ......

Good Luck ..

We all have made what I call "bonehead" mistakes at one time or another in our careers. The key is to learned from it, move forward, and stop punishing yourself.

Yes it is. When I did the same (missed a Doc) I could have beat myself to death. I just sucked it up and went back out and made the correction.

I asked myself, are you going to do this again? Or pay more attention? Well it happen again until I realized what the problem was....I was not taking charge of the signing...to much talking, socializing.

Now I'm probably A very boring NSA because I just concentrate on getting the job done and that's it. I even bring my own water so I don't have to deal with different glasses. LOL

it is good to share bad experiences as well as good ones. Thanks for sharing.

"each time I have them sign the document, they then sign my journal, I fill out the verbiage then apply my stamp and so forth."

This seems awfully cumbersome. I don't live in CA, but I would think you could just have them sign your journal entries after the closing.

I missed stamping one once. When the tc called me, I was sure I did everything right.
They emailed it to me and sure enough, I missed stamping it. I couldn't believe it. I apologized to the tc, and she said" don't worry about it, it happens all the time". I said " What!!! not with me".

Anyway I had to eat the postage for overnighting it back. Lesson learned.

check , check, and check again all your docs before leaving the signing. The borrowers appreciate the careful attention your giving and it saves you the embarassment later and my just save a client for you. I find it absolutely amazing that many notaries do not check the docs before leaving signing and before shipping. Two minutes and your saving yourself untold anguish.

I'm a new signer, so... when I went to the signing I had everything flagged with different color flags. I put Large Red flag where I needed to Notarize ( top of Page ) and a flag where the signers needed to sign. Different color for each. I had flags everywhereSmile I haven't got a call yet. I did the signing several days ago. I've been tempted to call and make sure it's ok. Do you ever call and ask?

NO! Don't rock the boat

They'll let you know soon enuff if you screwed up. You could call or e-mail and say how much you enjoyed working with them on the such-and-such file and hope to hear from them again soon for any signings in your area, but don't let them know you're feeling a little "insecure."

Good advise, but I'd lose the flags.

Nina - I always check at the table before leaving

the signing.
I have missed an initial or two and it was easy to just have the borrowers initial areas missed/overlooked.
I have undoubtedly saved a trip back to borrowers on more than one occasion.

Re: Nina - I always check at the table before leaving/ Ditto

I say: "Okay guys we're done! I just need a couple of minutes to double check everything, 'cause I've been known to make mistakes." I then take the face down stack of signed docs and go through every single page. You’d be surprised how often one of the parties misses an initial.

Don't beat yourself up Matham!
None of us is infallible.

I made big mistake this week (no I am not going to go into it), and it entailed me having to rush Fedex a letter to the U.S State Dept to get it (hopefully) corrected.

I dropped a package once and when I got home I found the check for the closing funds still in my copier (had to be faxed back). Luckily, it was still early so I fedexed it out the same day using my own account and called the TC to let them know. They actually added $20 to my check to cover the costs with a note saying "mistakes happen".

It is kind of others to confess to their errors.

Personally, I have completed thousands of closing and have never made a mistake. Over the years some documents have been returned by me w/o dates, signatures, initials, & even stamps, however these issues have always been due to earthquakes, tsunamis, global warming (borrowers house too warm), and/or George Bush.

My procedure for reviewing docs:

1) Watch signer sign the doc
2) Review signature when I pick take the document from the signer
3) Review all of the docs before I leave the borrower's home

Works for me!
