Just got a call for a signing TONIGHT

So cal signing called me a 4:45 P.M.

"I wonder if you are available for a signing tonight in your town?"

Me " TONIGHT"

Caller " open time"

Me " How many pages do I have to print?"

Caller " I don't know, it's a refi"

Me " Who is the lender then, I probably can figure the size of the package if I know who the lender is?"

Caller " I don't know"

Me " I need to know how many pages to print so I can figure how much to charge"

Caller " I'll find out and call you right back"

45 minutes later and NO CALL BACK, maybe he found someone to do it for a small fee. I've only done 1 other signing for So Cal signing and they paid me, but it took a while and several remiders. After I got the message to Lisa, I was paid.

I like to know what I'm getting into before I accept a job. I've done refi signing with small packages, under 50 pages and 1 notarization, to large packages over 125 pages with 12 notarizations. Am I wrong for asking questions?

They called me just now for one on Saturday, e-docs $75. Pretty pathetic.

The scheduler often doesn't know how many pages are in a loan package.

<<<The scheduler often doesn't know how many pages are in a loan package.>>>

I believe the real issue is: Does the scheduler really not know, or do they know but are deliberately withholding details? I say it's the latter, because these companies want as many extras services (for FREE) as they can get (i.e. fax backs, extended travel to borrower, huge loan package, etc).

To Buddy: By all means, ask questions. But even when you ask, you still may not get all of the details until you're hit with the confirmation - THEN you'll see the:

a) Fax back entire loan package.
b) No pay if the loan doesn't fund.
c) $50 penalty if you don't email an invoice 2 minutes to midnight of the 2nd even numbered weekday following the signing.
d) No borrower contact.
e) Payment terms - Net Maybe/Never
f) $50 penalty if you miss answering ONE of our 12 calls during the signing.
g) Every page MUST be initialed by borrower 1 in the top left and bottom right corners.
Borrower 2 must initial in the top right and bottom left corners. $50 penalty if even ONE initial is missed or the initials are not where instructed.

Which is why I highly advocate sending a fee schedule at the time of negotiations, this way you spell out your fees for various types of signings and give pricing for additional services, extra large packages and extended travel.

Ask yourself: Which is worse:

1. Sending a fee schedule and not getting the signing?

OR

2. Accepting the signing and pricing it based on the phone conversation, then being emailed a job much different AND LESS PROFITABLE than the scheduler described?

Re: Thanks LTK, your post answered my question

" should I ask questions?"
Now I know how I will handle this senerio in the future.
I will quote a fee schedule. xxx for edocs, xx if over so many pages, xx for short notice, etc.

That's what this forum is all about, helping each other get it right, so we won't make the same mistake twice.

Some people sieze every oportunity to discredit other notaries, which is very unproffessional to say the least. If you don't have anything constuctive to say don't replay, allthough I do appreciate Hugh's support in this matter.

There are a lot of knowlegable notaries who post on this forum, and I appreciate their postings. There are also a lot of notaries on this forum that don't know sh1t, so they resort to unconstuctive trash talking. That kind of bashing only tells me how limited their knowledge is.

If it's for a refi, you can assume it's at least 100 pages. If it's a small package, they will usually let you know, something like, "It's only 28 pages, will you do it for $35.00?"

The average refi is about 100 pages. A skilled professional closer can guide the borrower through a 150 page pig in less then one hour. Most scheduler do not have the info that you were seeking. The time you wasted with your attitude, questions and posting would have been better spent taking the job and earning some money

I don't recall having seen you on here before, Lola, so I surmise that you don't post in NotRot. I'm also assuming that in those venues where you do post, the other participants are similarly unaccustomed to conducting their business without namecalling. So I'm going to suggest that you retire to those venues, where you should feel much freer to spew whatever vomitus moves you at the moment.

You don't belong here.

My guess is that she tried to correct a typo in her first post: "pig" s/b "pkg"? (The "i" and "k" keys use the same finger, if you're a touch typist.)

I agree Janet.

BTW, Lola has been a contributor here for some time. Not as worried about being a comic as just getting the info squared away.

How many times have others attempted to correct themselves and still make the same mistake? I think an apology is in order, by at least 2.

Are you wrong? Perhaps not, but isn't the real issue a bit different altogether here?

Why don't just just price yourself by time - your time spent on the job. Once you decide what you are worth, make your pricing structure all inclusive.

For most jobs I am there an hour, approx. 100 pages. When a package arrives that is 60 pages, I do not offer a lower price - there is very little difference in overall time spent on the job. I get lots of smaller packages, so I profit more you could think. But not always - had 31 pages this am that took 1.5 hours because of the amount of blanks that needed to be filled in and that dreaded 'Statement of Information' form. I have done 150 pages in less time. So you see, the individual job in this case should have priced out more, but my last full refi took much less time so it was a wash. It is knowledge and time we are selling.

Since I price for the average, I don't worry about the variations. It averages out in the long run. For that all-inclusive price I courtesy scan and email 5 pages. Printing an extra 20 pages is costing me 40 cents (times 2)....build it into your price. Maybe you need a new printer? Better paper source and/or buy in bulk?

You are fighting the wrong battle here with the wrong person. Your objective here should be to work, not antagonize the scheduler and lose out altogether. If there are obscene variations (meaning I cry, "Oh, help!") then I call back and ask for more $$, but that is rare.

In a scenario such as this one, I have 2 questions.

1. Are docs ready?
2. What is the address?

As far as the rest of the details, it all comes out in the wash.

IMO.

Buddy-I agree with jba set a base fee for your services...

If you need to modify your base fee, and the highering company wants to hire you, perhaps they woulds agree to some type of fee modification.
Set you fee at a comfortable amount for you. As Julianne stated some packages are quicker - some longer. Set your fee based on the averages.
~~~~> If you have an favorable rapport with the hiring company, through my experience, they will accommodate you.
How much do you get paid to watch TV? Do you want to work or not? Do you really think a scheduler wants to be cross-examined about details?
Since I have not found anyone who will pay me to watch TV, the questions to ask are: Where, when, are docs ready, and how much will you pay?
<<<How much do you get paid to watch TV?>>>
How much would a Notary get paid (profit) to complete a 200 page reverse mortgage with fax backs and travel of 60 miles one way for $65 ?
<<<Do you want to work or not?>>>
For less than minimum wage, or FREE ? NO
<<<Do you really think a scheduler wants to be cross-examined about details?>>>
Cross-examined? Since when is getting information to adequately price a job "cross-examination"?
<<<Since I have not found anyone who will pay me to watch TV, the questions to ask are: Where, when, are docs ready, and how much will you pay?>>>
Where: Travel 60 miles one way in rush hour traffic
When: 5pm on Friday
How much: $65
