Bad Notary

I had a lady come over today she needed something notarized. She had a vehicle (original) POA that she said her grandmother in FL signed but that a Notary in Ohio notarized it. That notary left the date blank and also did not fill in the ack portion. This lady said the Notary told her he didnt know how to fill that in!

This notary notarized a POA for a lady who is in FL and on top of that he can't fill in the date nor the ack form?? I told this lady sorry I will not touch this..Also told her that what that notary did was an illegal act and could help perpertrate fraud!

I did get the name of the notary and I would love to call him and talk to him..I looked him up on the SOS site and he has a renwed commission so he has been at this for a while..

What do you guys think about my calling him?

Yeah, The SOS is the one to call. That was plain foolish.

SOS can't take any action unless someone files a complaint in the county where the notary's commission is recorded, then that county court recommends any action to the SOS. But few people would know this process even exists.

Do contact the notary, Claudine, and explain their error. I do this all the time when I encounter sloppy procedures, or lack of knowledge about best practices. They are usually very grateful.

Please also refer the notary to the Ohio Society of Notaries website where they can learn a great deal about what they don't know.

A young woman came to me with a complaint about a notary in the next county, who also has been a notary for a couple of terms, she took my notary and loan signing class. She notarized a US Passport with an acknowledgment, charged the notary $50, and the Korean Consulate would not accept it. I advised her to go back to this notary and request her money back, and we notarized with the Custodial Certificate so she could get her travel approved for ESL teacher background check that same day. This notary caused the traveler serious stress, delay in process and cash in vain.

We can't notarized birth, marriage, death certificates, USPassports, photos, etc., as you well know.

How this notary missed this, I'll never know.

Yikes. It's too bad that there are many untrained notaries

out there who don't have a clue about the legal ramifications of notary work. Yeesssh!
