New SA, Have questions
I have a simple but vague question.... What is a decent rate to charge for my traveling services? I have been a notary for many years, and have notarized and acknowledged many different documents, including a wide array of loan docs. However, I have never really made any money at it, just merely because I didn't realize there was money to be made. I had a wonderful gentleman come out to by refy last year and introduced me to this site. Since then I have gotten a couple of calls and was really unsure on how to handle them. Can any one point me in the right direction to get these "Signing Agent for Dummies" questions answered? Thanks!!

I still do not have a problem with 2 deed in the package. It is not our place to choose what documents any signs. We are to just to notarize there signatures. It is the signers job to decided if they want to sign the forms even if they are 2 or 200 of the same form in a package. Any thing else is Unauthorized Practice of Law.

A fair rate would be your actual costs, plus something for your time. What would a similar distance traveled by a taxi, or a messenger/delivery service in your area cost?

I have two separate rate structures. For general notary
work I have a minimum fee established with travel (it is $5/notarization in VA with no restrictions on travel fees). For loan signing work I have a flat rate minimum fee of $xxx including edocs, etc. I do add extra for large pkgs. (over 140 pgs) and faxbacks, etc. I've come to know the going rate in the market I'm in. If I'd charge what I'd really like to I'd price myself out of the market. Please do not accept the offers from the low-ballers of say $75 per signing for instance. That won't turn out to be profitable for you & hurts the industry as a whole. I hope you are aware that there is more to loan signing work than just the notarizations. You do need to be able to review the loan docs with the clients. Good luck. :-)
