Sue, I think this would be considered advertising, which is against the rules here.

Observation on Selling Notary Business

This is probably the poorest venue on which to sell it.

Those who would know what to do with it when they got it would be quite skeptical and negative.

Better would be Craigslist and newspaper; maybe even Carol's newsletter. She provides ad space.

Re: Observation on Selling Notary Business

Formula for $UCCE$$ in this BU$INE$$

Energy + Marketing Innovation + Contacts + Willingness to Work Hard = Profit$

I think this would be the most difficult business to be able to forecast another's ability to make a go at this...

So how does one establish a bulk sale price on a biz like ours...

"So how does one establish a bulk sale price.." - you don't

You take each component, put a value to it and add it all up...

Inventory
Client List
Telephone number
Name
Good Will
??Location??

All have value and have to be taken into consideration when establishing a sale price for a business..

I think our colleague, Buddy, sold a business before becoming a notary - he's probably got a lot of good advice about considerations in this type of deal...

I don't think Harry would have a problem with this. It's an opportunity for a notary, and there is no NotRot competition issue.

Valuing a service business such as ours is a fairly straightforward task. She's wise to attempt to generate some capital from the effort she's put into building up the business.

Disagree Hugh...it falls under the "wasted space" rule.

and the "without prior approval" code.

I. Advertising
Do not advertise your own products or services without prior approval. Most advertisements are not relevant to most users and are therefore wasted space.

This is the same as selling an opportunity of any kind. Get permission, be respectful, etc.

Geez, if "wasted space" is the criterion here...

...I won't be allowed to post at all.

So she's selling a client list and maybe some equipment and a website and an EIN#?

I don't think you can sell an EIN, can you? n/m

I do too...but everything has a value...especially in

business...inventory alone can add up to a pretty penny, and if the client list is well structured that can be a bonanza in and of itself..

Unfortunately, in this business, the buyer is going to have to prove themselves to the client list - there's no guarantee in the transaction that the client list will do business with the buyer...

Sue, I don't think you'll have much success selling your business.

Each notary has to prove himself or herself to clients.

You would be better off selling off all your equipment and charging another notary for referals.

For example: I'll refer all my clients to you for $10 an assignment.
