A Handgun at the signing table!

I met with borrowers on Christmas Eve. They were very hostile and upset with the LO. As I was IDing them, I noticed a handgun on the table next to me! Uh, not comfortable with that, especially with the hostility. Turns out the signers name on docs didn't match the id. She had a different last name on docs, not shown on her id. She tried to tell me it had always been ok in the past, and she used to be a notary. I wouldn't accept that id, and she also said it's not the name she wanted on docs anyway. She wanted a different last name, also not shown on her id.

The SS says they want me back after redraw. Not sure I want the money badly enough. Not with a gun on the table!

Are you willing to risk your life?

Not me! I would have asked that the gun be put somewhere

safe or I'd be out of there. There's nothing about this biz that warrants the risk.

Nope. I'm shaking just reading your post. The ingredients

of that stew are all wrong, and foretold is forewarned.

No. Meet at a public place, and not until her ID matches the docs, or ... it sounds like a wonderful opportunity for *somebody,* but no thanks.

Get paid for this fiasco, and kick it on down the road...or as I used to be fond of saying, if I were you, I wouldn't pet that dog.

As soon as I noticed it, I would have asked that it be moved to a safer location. It is not that I don't like guns or approve of them, etc., but hostile people do hostile things. There are safer places than on the table, next to me or not.

Stupid people. Don't go back.

I am from a family that has always had firearms for protection or hunting. Responsible people don't leave pistols lying around the house. I mean, you might have a pistol lying on a table if you are in the midst of cleaning it when the doorbell rings unexpectedly, but you don't leave one in reach of a perfect stranger that you knew was coming to the house. And, it would have been very clear if they were cleaning it, and even at that, it should be put away when an outsider enters the home.

Nut jobs. Tell the hiring party in writing and call them to punctuate the warning. They should not send anyone back out to that house. Those people are soft in the head.

Knowing what I do about responsible people who have firearms, only a solid gold jerk would leave a pistol lying out like that under those circumstance. Frankly, I think that it was there to impress upon you what bad@$$e$ they are. Doesn't matter if it is loaded or not, it was there to upset you.

Re: Stupid people. Don't go back.

Thanks for all the replies. I had decided it's definitely not worth going back out there. It is a good idea for me to inform the SS to warn the next notary who gets sent out.

It's a good point that the gun was likely there to intimidate me. Who knows what could have happened. Pretty freaky!

These kind of people are worse than stupid. They are dangerous and the very fact that the gun is in sight sends a message to you. The message being, "don't go back"!

Not to mention they wanted you to break the law

. . . by trying to coerce you to notarizing without propely id-ing them. The law does not mean much to these people: they do as they please.

Pretty insensitive given what has transpired in Connecticut and in Upstate New York this month. Very unkind and lacking intelligence.

Their LO should know, as well as title/escrow. So inappropriate.

I just realized that I would have excused myself and said I had to go get something from my car and probably took off but then I would have probably had my stamp out, etc etc and then I would have been majorly concerned about taking my stamp with me ----so my new policy now is going to be "do not take stamp out until I know environment is safe". BUT I usually take my pocketbook in with me which houses my stamp - so now I have decided to only carry in the docs in a bag/etc that I do not care about leaving there if I think I have to make a quick exit. My life feels threatened I dont care about leaving docs nor that bag. No more carrying in or pocketbook - just folder/bag with docs, one business card to give them (maybe), and pens. BUT then the journal!!! Geez - a gun on a side table - scary no doubt. Scariest thing I had happen was when I walked into a house and I immediately had my picture taken by the man who was a single signer. He said just in case this loan thing turns out to be a fraud, etc.
At least I did not have to worry about him selling my photo etc --over the hill now.

Gun at table is rude & stupid..I keep mine out of sight.

Truly, a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Not to brandish it; that's agains the law in many places. I know lots of guys like to strap it on their hip (who are not police officers required), and different states have assorted laws. But, when you first saw it--to me--it would be ok to show that you were intimidated, start packing up your bag to leave. With the docs. I'd do the same thing if a signer appeared inebriated, naked, or whatever. IF a gun had just been cleaned/or cleaning, you would smell the gun oil when the door was opened, if not before. No excuse for being rude idiots, and for sure I would contact the "during signing/after-hours" number & spell it out for whoever answers. Life is too short!
