No having FLOA

This business has its perks, but I am learning having a job with some type of FLOA is important as my mother was just diagnosed with stage 4 cancer that has spread to her brain and other organs.

Sorry about your mom. I wish you all of God's blessings for everything you and your mom are facing. My prayers for you and your family.

As a side note, FMLA certainly would help. However, it, too, has its restrictions. For future reference, you may want to talk to your State Disability office. You may be able to pay into a disability plan in case you ever need it again. You also may want to talk to Social Security Administration and see if there's any relief there. And, finally, you may want to touch base with cancercare.org.

I wasn't aware that FMLA is leave WITH pay

I thought it just provided that someone could take extended leave for family medical matters and not have it held against them.

FMLA or not - I'll still take the flexibility of self-employment over having to answer to a boss and/or co-workers why I can't come into work or why I have to be out for several days at a clip.

Good grief where was my head??

I should have said this in my post and I sincerely apologize for the oversight..

I am so very sorry to hear about your mother. What a shock it must be for all of you. Stay strong and my prayers to you all to ease you through this horrible time.

As the mother of a cancer survivor (my son), and the granddaughter to a wonderful man who lost his battle, my prayers are with you and your family.

This is how my Dad went too. He was so determined to outsmart his cancer, but in the end it got em. He died of pneumonica and renal failure shortly after midnight on 9/11/07, with fourth stage prostrate cancer that spread throughout his body...he lived with it for five years.

All my best to you. There is nothing like the loss of a parent. Be strong and always present. God is with you to see you through it. You're right, we have some perks as SE CEO's of our own companies, lacking FL perks, vacation and of course, sick leave.

Lisa, it sounds as if you will have to be strong beyond anything you ever imagined for your mother. I know you will be there for her.

Cheryl, one of the consequences of our unrelenting focus on women's health is that men's health concerns have largely been slighted. Enormous public resources are devoted to conquering breast cancer; it is the iconic potentially lethal femaile illness, because nothing is as female as the breast. Prostate cancer kills about as many men as breast cancer kills women, yet we devote so few resources to identifying a cure that one of the preferred "treatments" -- possibily THE preferred treatment -- is just to let it race old age to see which kills the victim first, because it is a slow-growing cancer.

Stay strong, Lisa. Stay strong.

I lost my sister in AZ in September. I was glad that I was able to take off from my signing business to be with her at the last. I understand your grief.

I am praying for you and your mom. It's not easy to deal with this, especially when you are self-employed. I am sending angels to look after you and your family.

Bless you.

I understand what you are saying about the medical leave. Since my mother would depend on me, in your case I would be able to take all of my sick leave at work, plus be able to tap into the medical leave that is donated by employees who are leaving and have accumulated hundreds of days of leave.

You are right, some medical leave programs allow employees to be off long term for several months, if necessary.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.
