Pathetic fee
So for $50, you're asking me to drive 127 miles round-trip, an hour each way, have the signer complete a nine-page form, then I have to fax it back to you, wait for notification of approval, and then send it back to you by regular US mail, at my own expense. Am I on Candid Camera?

I've decided to start replying to the lowballers with the standard IRS allowable rate for mileage (.555 right now, or $70.485 in your scenario), plus a reasonable hourly rate for my time, which is not minimum wage. Even if I were to accept minimum wage ($7.25/hour), figuring at least 3 hours including printing, driving and fax backs, that's another $22, for a rounded total of $92.
I realize these signing companies want to get the job by bidding low, and make some money by contracting at low rates, but I feel like they are asking us to lower our standard of living in order for them to stay in business. I'm in business too, and I want to make a profit too. Since there is no way any entity can guarantee me a certain amount of business at any given time (after all, it is a needs-based enterprise), I have to spend my time and limited energy earning my livelihood. I am not an employee, and cannot accept less than employee wages.
Off my soapbox.

Dream on, Ikando, dream blissfully on.
We both know that your fellow Okie notaries are willing to take their fees most of the time in coyote hides and a bus ticket south of the Red River to Dallas just for the pleasure of using a flush toilet and not having to use a page from the Sears Roebuck catelog.

If that was meant to be funny you definitely missed the mark but then...what else is new?

Certainly not you being snarky, Sue; that's been around for a while.
As has the rivalry between the Longhorns and the Sooners.

Comments like this on the work forum show exactly how professional you are, don't they. If you want to get in the gutter with Hugh would you be kind enough to take it to another forum or website?

Take your 'tude next door with SueW, desk. Neither of
you get to determine what "gutter" another poster is "in."

Buddy, I’m going to address this to you...
...but the audience is much larger. You have, in the past as you did in this thread, occasionally expressed some amusement at my contributions to this forum. Conversely, several other posters have expressed decidedly more jaundiced views of me and my comments, and I didn’t want you to think you were out on a limb.
This is basically the only venue in which I do any writing at all nowadays. Maybe once every year or two, I’ll work up enough high umbrage to ship off an opp-ed to a newspaper somewhere, but that’s getting to be about as rare as a smile from a pretty girl.
I enjoy writing in both the Discuss Work and Leisure forums of NotRot, and I’m under the impression that many others enjoy my usually short but I hope piquant observations. (This is not one of those “short but piquant observations). NotRot is a bit of a strange landing place for me as a wordsmith. Over a fairly long career in public life and the mass media, I think I evoked a few sincere chuckles as a newspaper feature writer and columnist, a teacher, a public speaker and a frequent TV and radio talk show guest.
Sometimes, though, as in this thread, I get pushback from forum participants who, to put it charitably, are not overly enamored of my contributions. I tend to ignore those, for two reasons: One, they are far outnumbered by approving comments both public and private; and Two, they also almost always tend to be from people who are on opposite sides of the political spectrum from me and with whom I have occasionally directed somewhat pointed comments on another forum. The latter is true of the three pursed-lipped commenters in this thread. Their view of me and whatever I had to say would not be influenced even if they understood the longstanding tradition of jocular rivalry between Texans and Okies, Longhorns and Sooners.
Nonetheless, whatever I contribute to this forum that is not solely, 100 percent straight up and down dyed in the wool solid professional advice or comment is not intended to diminish the forum or to be self-promotion. It’s fun for me, an outlet that has replaced more extensive past venues, and I hope fun for readers. But it does take time, and if they are largely unappreciated, I can always take my quiver of quips and inflict them on Lucy the Chihuahua, who long ago recognized she’s stuck with me because there’s a glut of Chihuahuas on the market since Taco Bell sent its Chihuahua packing.
So, if you and other posters have had enough of my alleged humor, just let me know. You can do it on forum, by PM, by email, or Mike can send one of his New Jersey cousins with an affinity for kneecaps and baseball bats to look me up. There’s already three votes in this thread for me to put a sock in it. A word of caution, though: Even if I don’t share a shred of his talent, I do share Mark Twain’s proclivity for the irreverent, the profane, the ribald, the salacious and even the scatological. Telling me to keep it coming but to tone it down is the same as telling me to turn it off. It ain’t gonna happen.
Thanks for reading. Let me hear from forum readers, pro or con, and be assured that either way we’ll still be close enough friends where I’ll feel quite comfortable borrowing money from you. And now, if you will excuse me, I have three noses I have to go tweak.

Re: Buddy, I’m going to address this to you...
I've never actually counted, Hugh, but it's my overall impression that, over time, there have been many more comments here in appreciation of your witticisms than complaints (if we exclude JP, of course, which many of us try to avoid like the plague). I'd venture to guess, as you alluded to, that most of the negatives come from people you've tussled with over at JP and newer folks who don't realize that they shouldn't take many of your comments literally.
Shucks, if you stopped using this place as your outlet, it just wouldn't be the same around here...

Wow...beautifully put Janet. I enjoy some of Hugh's posts...for sure he's a knowledgable NSA and with his legal training his remarks carry a bit more weight for us all. I don't appreciate his comments on folks from the South, I don't appreciate his name calling, and I don't appreciate his bully tactics. It's really too bad that those that have either cancelled their membership (there's quite a few in case you're wondering) OR no longer post here will not see his latest post requesting a poll on his popularity. I personally miss some of those posters who had valuable contributions to make and if you think about it for any length of time you'll realize some of those that I'm speaking of.

Re: Buddy, I’m going to address this to you...
I can't imagine Hugh not being on this forum. I miss his posts on JP and I think everyone needs to put it in perspective. He is passionate about his beliefs and I respect that. Anyone that has been on this forum for any length of time, should recognize his humor by now and not be offended by it. What one sees as humor, another may be offended. That's just the way it is. I have seen him personally attacked on many occasions, but he always has a comeback. Some people just take life too seriously, especially if their core beliefs differ from someone else's.
Don't stop posting, Hugh. You have filled some of my very off days with laughter, and for that I can't thank you enough.

Hugh, I never visit JP or Leisure, but I do enjoy your posts here when I agree with them and when I do not. Your push/shove with Ikando [who gets it] about Longhorns [Texans] and Sooners [Okies] never seems mean-spirited and is just the same as our local problems between Packers/Brewers [Cheeseheads] and Cubs/Bears [flatlanders]. As to everyone else, I have been the subject of outrage and praise here and will just, like Hugh, keep posting and never make a personal attack.
