does anyone know....

what international calls cost these days? Silly me tried to call the borrs at the number the SS provided me with to confirm appt..... only to find out the number was to borrs corporate office in Alaska. Apparently, Alaska is international calling to my cell phone provider. Provider could not tell me what the cost would be, but, it will 'just be on your next bill'. Lovely. And, yes, normally, I do check and see where the area code is, but, it was a crazy, busy day. Turned down 3 signings all for 6 o'clock today. Gonna be a wild month end. And, yes, I plan on talking to the SS about good numbers and international calling charges. and, yes, I'll have a little wine with my whine......

That would tick me off too

It would never have occured to me that I could possibly be calling Alaska. I would be ticked if I incurred international charges in an attempt to call a borrower.

Calling cards are a great (cheap) investment

If you go to any supermarket that caters to African or Hispanic communities, you can find calling cards in very low dollar increments $2-$5, and usually they are sold under face value. (I just bought a bunch of $5 cards for $4 each). It might not be a bad idea to hang on to one or two of the $2 ones--just don't activate them until you need them.

I do a lot of humanitarian work in Africa and I have a stack of these sitting by my desk all the time. The going rate for a land line international call is usually around $1.50-$2 a minute, but I don't know about Canada/Alaska. I usually pay $0.10/$0.18 per minute with my prepaid calling cards.

One note, it doesn't do any good to buy them in larger increments as they usually have a one time connection fee and a $0.35 cent per day charge. I've never gotten two calls out of one card, but at least I know my costs are fixed.

When I was in Ethiopia in 2008, I was attacked by a dog. I called my husband who called the doctors, and called me back with a treatment plan. The phone call was $78.00, and as I recall, not all that long. (We must have been charged a connection fee?)

Other low-cost alternatives are Google Voice, and Skype, If you use either of these, international calls are pretty cheap.

Good luck, and sorry you encountered this. What a pain!

Re: what cell service thinks Alaska is international?

Agree with Phillip. Alaska is not international, I would take this up with your phone company.
