My Guardian Angel
I'm not sure if this is a post which is allowable but I feel if I write how I am feeling fellow seasoned notaries can feel my concern. I have been a notary for over 27 yrs. Over that many yrs. you will note the enjoyable signings. The what was I thinking when I took that signing. Then there comes the signing I pray no other notary ever comes across as I did this past weekend. This past Thursday, I accepted a 8:00 p.m. signing in a town about 15 miles from my residence. The borrower seemed like as though she had her thoughts on something else. I asked her did she know what she was signing and was she ok with it, which she said she did understand so I proceeded with the signing. On Saturday morning on the news a report came about a double homicide on Friday evening the town I did the signing. I said to my husband, "I was just in that town on Thursday night." On Sunday evening the news focused on the house and the murder victim's name and picture. Sadly it was the person I sat with 24 hrs prior to her death. I am a extremely strong person but this is working on me since I can see her and her two lovely boys in my thoughts. My Guardian Angel must have been with me since the signing could have been scheduled for Friday. You may not post this, and I understand, but if you do let me end by saying to fellow notaries just be safe. Please say a prayer for the victims family and the authorities apprehend the person who did this horrific crime and they do not harm anyone else.

Wow that's all I can say! You say she seemed deep in thought on another matter. Maybe it was someone she new? How very sad.

I would certainly be affected. I'm sure, (I could be wrong
but IMO and experience) that it will prove to be either domestic violence or a family member/friend.
It's certainly traumatizing. Unfortunately, these are the circumstances we could potentially have to face. Thank G*d you were not in the wrong place at the wrong time. The fact of the matter is that we need to know that we do sometimes put ourselves in very precarious situations.
If we're going to be in this business, we have to accept that and be aware of our surroundings and cognizant that these are unforeseen tragedy's that happen everyday. Unfortunately people assume that it could never happen to them But I can tell you that these things don't just happen in the movies or to someone else. Because of things I've been subjected to, I never underestimate the saying..."There but for the grace of G*d go I." Nothing surprises me in this life anymore. That's for sure!
Of course it would be ludicrous to live a life in fear, but sometimes we have to think outside the box-our own little world-and stay diligent of our safety.

had one too
She was murdered by her boyfriend, not the next day like in your case, easy to remember because her last name was Ireland. He was at the closing too.
Had another lady that I saw her death notice in the paper 6 days after I signed her.

That was disturbing news, and I'm sure you've wondered if
she had reason to fear that something was going to happen. There was a story from another notary a couple of months ago about arriving at a murder scene. A few years ago when we sold my parents home in PA, the selling agent died a couple of hours after the closing from a heart attack. It's always shocking to be reminded that life changes in an instant. I hope you are ok.

We don't know that it was a murder scene - only that there was a death.
Rumors folks....

That's enough to shake up the most tough-minded person out there!! I'm glad you're physically OK. Emotionally, it may take a while for the shock to wear off, but it will.
And thanks for sharing your experience so we all can learn from it, i.e. always be aware of our environment and conscientious about safety.

Thank God you are ok..This is the perfect place to post this..It is an experience that we as notaries can and should learn a lesson from..We never know what can happen when we go in to peoples homes.. We should all pay atatention to our surroundings..
God bless you and her family. Have you spoken to the police? Maybe you noticing her state of mind on Thursday could help the police in some way?
Stay strong!
