Occupational hazard?
Aside from faking it, what do you do when you knock on someone's door and they instantly recognize you from having been there for their last refi 3 or 4 years ago, but you, of course, have absolutely no recollection of them, their house or anything else.
Recently, Mr. Borrower answered the door and seemed happy to see me. I played along. That was easy.
But then there's the one who said: "Oh, you again." Yikes!
The other day, half way through the signing, the woman announced I did her last refi. To which I replied: "I don't think so; I think I would have remembered." Thus, not only insulting her but showing what a complete doofus I am.
So, what's a good line to use on these occasions where you're being recycled??

I just say thank you for remembering me. I do so many of these signing that I loose track of who I have signed with.

Ditto above because...
while I do usually remember something (the house, the way I got there, some memorable object), I only rarely remember the people, but do run into this situation a lot and do as OR does because--they might be wrong and the last notary could have been an idiot. I won't own what I don't remember!

That is a good answer. Be honest. Now if Im in a strange mood, I might say, 'I sometimes dont even remember who that person is in the mirror in morning.'

You'll have to forgive me. Alzheimer's is really bad this time of month. Usually I remember my exceptionally beautiful (handsome) clients.

Smile and nod.
I say "it's always nice to see repeat clients!" (Even though yes, I know the signer for loan signings isn't usually the client, they don't usually realize that.

I find I usually remember the house more than the people
I get thrown off if people have moved, or if the context has changed dramatically--for example: snow in winter vs. summer.

ARTG's response about being honest is what I would use. I'm thinking if the BO suddenly wakes up and realizes you were NOT the one they thought you were (after you had replied: thank you for remembering me) that could be embarrassing. JMO

I ask, "How long ago was I here?" Then they say something like, "3 years ago" (like I can remember everyone in the last three years". I say, "I tend to remember the difficult jobs, so yours must have gone well - which is a good sign." Then they ask me how my son is doing in the Navy, or some other very specific thing.
