Printer problem (Brother MFC8220)

I know. I know. I've stated on here that I've had this Brother printer since 2006 with no problems. Well ... now it starts.

Was printing package this morning when, all of a sudden, it starts making a loud, slow grinding noise. It's still printing but print is lighter and I'm getting horizontal gray lines across paper.

I had recently changed toner cartridge. So, I try changing that. No difference. Tried changing drum. No change. Tried blowing out with compressed air. No change. Tried lifting printer from 2nd tray to see if anything's stuck. Nothing there and no change. Tried finding printer repair person. Unable to find one in my area. Any other suggestions?

I'm now in the process of looking to buy a new printer. Tried Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy. Best Buy business dept is closed 'til Monday 7 am. Staples and Office Depot - I can order and receive Tuesday or Wednesday.

This is what I get for not having a back-up. Frown

All help is greatly appreciated! And, all those snide remarks are also welcomed. I'm already kicking myself.

A grinding noise from a printer is never a good thing... if it's a drum issue or a toner issue or some sort of paper jam, the printer would simply refuse to do anything until you cleared the problem. Since it's still valiantly trying to print, it sounds like a motor or gear has been damaged; it may not be worth the cost of repair.

Try Amazon for a replacement printer - their prices are generally better than the brick & mortar stores, and they offer expedited shipping (at a price) so that you can have the replacement in hand by Monday if you order quickly enough today.

And after you get your replace and have a chance to catch your breath - give some serious thought to buying a backup printer, even if it's just one of the cheaper HP models.

Thanks, Mike!

In my frazzled state of mind, I had completely forgotten about Amazon.

They do have the model I want. However, the best they offer for shipping is 3-5 business days. I'm looking at the Brother MFC 8890DW and, of course, Amazon has the best price.

If I go through Staples for same model and pay $50 more, I can have it Tuesday by 5 pm. Either way, I miss EOM.

AND, yes, Mike. I will have a back-up from here on out. Thanks for being kind.

Sorry to hear about your problem, but suggest you check Staples again. search "Brother refurbished" which shows 5340D as $129, 5370DW ( ethernet and WIRELESS) connections and I believe more standard memory, $149 MFC 8680DN ( ethernet, no wireless ) $ 249. The GUTS ( engine ) of the MFC is the same as the 5370. ALL , including the MFC, use the same 2nd tray, LT-5300. If you wait for inventory to come in at Staples (I'd check via phone) or from another vendor you can get the 5370DWT, T being the 2nd tray (LT-5300) as part of the package, which is ALWAYS cheaper than buying separate.
Refurb Brother units all begin with "E" as in EHL-5370DW, EMFC-8680DN. The Brother refurbs all come with the SAME 1 year manufacturers warranty. I've seen the EHL 5370dwt as low as $249 or even on ocassion $229. Other reliable vendors for Bro refurb....Buy.com, PC Connection ( they have a cosumer and separate business side, check both, and a couple others I cant remember. Staples has other coupon codes out now, too, that should apply.

I feel your pain, tough anytime when the equipment fails, EOM or not. Good luck, post if you have any further questions.

Maybe you can check from back dropdown door while trying to print and see if anything is out of alighnment or if there is any debris

Thanks, BrO!

Ordered the Brother MFC 8890DW (w/2nd tray) from Amazon yesterday. I'll also be ordering the Brother 5370DWT later on this week. They both use the same toner cartridge and drum.

Luckily, the 2 pre-scheduled signings for EOM were already printed. Anything else, I'll be calling on Fedex for printing.

Won't be caught in this predicament again. Lesson learned.

Amazon.com has a sale on Brother 2 tray laser for $210.00 I paid $400.00 for a previous model. I believe this one is the HL 7340. I am seriously thinking about buying it to keep on hand until my current printer fails.

My model number shown is all wrong. I believe it is the 5370dwt mentioned in the previous post.
