Scam Notary posing as a business

Michael Zamora is poising as a business called Capitol Document Service, located in San Ramon Calif. He called me for a signing, sent me the order, on a very professional form that most signing companies have. I was asked for my information, W-9, commission, background check, so I would receive payment. There was no info on the company on notary rotary, figured he was new, gave him the benefit of doubt, so I sent him my info, did the signing in April. By end of May, started to call for payment. Then started to do some checking, there is no business and the address is a house. If we only had more time to check out business before we accept a signing, kinda hard to do unless you are sitting at your computer. I have left 2 messages, 1 email, threatened to call title company, no response. Now this poser has all my info, and I'm worried more about that than the money he owes.
Now in process of filing a complaint with BBB, state secretary, consumer affairs and possible police report.

You gave him your SSN?

I have an EIN and NEVER give out my SSN to anyone except a govt entity.

I'm more worried about my information than the money. And as for my SS#, I've never had a problem, but I will have to look into getting a TIN# instead of using my SS#
I just got a message from another notary I found that did work for him in March, he was just paid...yea for him.
If I can't find info on here or the web, I usually turn down, but he called me when I was on the road and I like to keep my commitments to have a good reputation as a notary. I just got done contacting the city license dept.
If you are doing business, collecting W-9's, you have to be licensed. Next stop..IRS I'm not one to be messed with and know how to shake the bugs out of the rug, so to speak.

Unfortunately this business is rife with liars, thieves, and scam artistes. The very nature of the way “we” do business attracts them like flies to (?). When we accept an assignment, we are usually granting credit to the person “hiring” us. (We do the job at an agreed price/ invoice/bill them, and hope they pay.) IMO anyone in this business that extends credit to someone not credit worthy, or a stranger, or that does not have at least 4/5 stars here is foolish. Chalk the cost/ loss up to a learning experience…and do NOT do it again. Ever! Better to ask for references and be turned down than to work for nothing. Many thieves are out there waiting.

If you aren't paid, bill escrow

I save the escrow info until I get paid.

A compaint with the BBB will do no good unless the guy who hired you is running a legitmate ( bona fide) business AND it has membership in the BBB. So, if he is crooked, it's unlikely that he'll be participating in BBB, and the BBB will thus not be contacting him on your behalf.

I did 2 signings for him 1/30/07. After a lot of chasing, he finally paid up via check and cash on 4/2/07. Never again!

I received a call this afternoon from a man with a strong accent who said "they" were "expanding" their services into the notary field, that "they" were marketing to title companies now and expected to have "at least" 500 assignments in Tennessee within the next month, that there would be no worry about being paid as they would direct-deposit into my account, and that they paid $60 per closing. He sounded like he was reading from a script. I couldn't understand the name of the company, although I asked a couple of times, but when he talked about direct-deposit into my account, I immediately thought "do I really want to give my bank account info to a total stranger/company", and of course the $60 per closing totally ended any possible interest I might have had. No, thank you, I'll take the "inconvenience" of making the deposit/cashing the check over allowing you access to my bank account any day. LOL

It's safer if they pay you via Paypal. n/m

There is a large company I do work for that does direct deposit but it is a known large company and it is nice to get paid with in 5 days.

I wish all companies would pay with direct deposit.
In the last 5 years I have had 15 checks get lost in the mail. Well that is how many I have had replaced by different companies. It is not a question of, "we mailed that check on such a such day" and they really did not. The post office has lost them. One just two weeks ago.

Wow! Thank you for the RED ALERT. I'll make sure I never get duped by this guy! What's his phone number so we can all put him in our contact list as a DEFINITE DEADBEAT COMPANY and not answer when he rings us up?

I'm sure there are more and more SMOOTH OPERATORS like Zamora we'll all be discovering in the coming years, as the economy is definitely not improving, but culling more and more crooked scam artists.

He is listed on Notary Rotary under Capitol Document Service ph#(925) 876-2304 out of San Ramon Ca
It seems there are others out there he has used their services and took 3 to 4 months to pay.
In reading some of my emails he sent he does a lot of work for 1 title company OIG Title in FL. I will be sending them an email making them aware of his business ethics. Thanks for your reply 101 livescan

Not trying to defend this guy in any way, but MANY signing services are actually one-man operations that work out of their home.

I'm with Copperhead on this. How do you assume it's not a

legit biz if it's a home address. My business is my home address. Many people in this biz work from home.
