Adobe 9.4

Seems to be quite a few people looking for a site to download an older version of Adobe. This link is what I used last time I need to download Adobe 9.4. Worked great for me.

I'm using 8.2.1 and don't have any problems (also using Win XP Prof). Every time I moved to update versions of Adobe Reader I had lot & lots of problems trying to print.

I tried Adobe X, what a disaster. Went back to 9.4 and all is well.

A word of caution about computer security, here.

First let me say that I use the latest version of Adobe without issue, on both my desktop and laptop. I run Windows Vista on my desktop and Ubuntu Linux on my laptop. It's been my experience when people I have helped either online or in person that when they are having issues with the latest Adobe, it's because they have not maintained other programs on their computer, including the operating system. It's my opinion that you should have all the latest updates installed to every program, including Windows or whatever operating system you are using because of the security updates. Many of the older program versions no longer are supported or are updated to plug any security holes. When there is a breach in a private home computer it's usually through one of these programs that are no longer supported with security updates. You can check on the website of any program that you have to see what versions are still supported. It's very important that you know this.

All that being said, if you choose to run the older versions of Adobe for one reason or another, then make sure that you do not allow Adobe to open the documents in the browser. Download the documents and save them to your computer, take your computer off line, then open the documents by right clicking on the file, choose "open with" and then choose your version of adobe. Also make sure that Adobe, what ever version you use, does not "resident" in your computer. What that means is that when you start your computer, you have what you call a start up list. In that list are programs that start and run in the background when your computer is on. You can check this by running the program "msconfig" and choose "start up". If you see Adobe there, then un-check the box and it won't start until you are ready to actually use the program. Anti-virus and anti-spyware programs will not help you when it comes to out of date programs.

For instructions on how to run "msconfig", click "start" in the bottom left corner and go to the help and support screen and search "msconfig". It will have links and instructions on how to run it for your particular version of windows. It's slightly different between XP, Vista and 7. You must restart your computer after making changes.

I really didn't realize how many issues can be caused by not properly updating computers until I began holding a once a month class at the local senior center several years ago. It's not a little problem, but it is a hugely overlooked one.

But what you do is up to you .....
