Help!

I spent most of my professional life in the communications industry, as a writer, reporter, editor and publisher. And now I have to admit publicly an appalling ignorance of the greatest advance in communications since the printing press: The Internet.

I can't get into the control center for my web site. I can go to the web site, but the favorites link to the control center, where I can make changes, no longer works. I frankly don't even have any idea who runs the damn thing; maybe Earthlink, since I get a bill from them every month, but I'm not really sure.

Any nerds out there who can offer some sage advice?

Call Al Gore; he invented the internet.

I disagree!
Julie just had her tongue in her cheek! Like when Hugh is out of line.

No - you see no humor unless it is yours.

No, Julie was 100% truthful in her way of saying, "I don't know" in a joking manner.

Had someone else said this, you would have laughed, agreeing.

Is levity disallowed here now?

Let me offer a mea culpa and move this to Leisure? Will you censure me there as well? It has absolutely no relevance in JP - this is a computer question. I was being "cute", but I guess you only see cute when you look in the mirror. Lighten up - things are not always a conspiracy.

Some observations

1. It is understandable, in light of Julie's previous insistence upon applauding political posts here by her philosophical cohorts, that someone of a different persuasion might interpret a post about a political figure and a former source of political ridicule as inappropriate.

2. That being said, I chose to accept Julie's post as a humorous comment, not a political one, if for no other reason than to avoid the rancor that inevitably follows such discussions here.

3. Having by an accidental post opened the Pandora's Box for all the bilious, hateful, and dyspeptic participants in NotRot, and a few who were righteously offended, wouldn't it be far more productive for everybody -- including all the bilious, hateful, and dyspeptic participants in NotRot, and the few who were righteously offended -- if we just got back to business?

Re: Some observations

1. no proof of this in any posts here. I am a registered Democrat, a fact which you repeatedly ignore. I cannot get you or your acolyte to recognize this...you believe what you wish for whatever reason. Since you do, your perceptions are riddled with falsehoods, therefore, your arguments are for naught.

2. Thanks. This is not the first time I have given a throw away comment, and probably not the last. I should have just stuck to my own self-imposed rule and ignored you, but a cry for help is hard to ignore, no matter who. I also should have added: "I really don't know, but someone will be along shortly with greater understanding of your plight and will respond." I have done that in the past and do not know why I didn't today.

3. Partial comment: I don't think anyone was offended quite frankly. Your arguments promote your own agenda of ignoring the fact that others have been offended by you and requested a proper "I'm sorry" of which you appear to continue to ignore. As for your post being accidental, most don't buy that either as you have consistently become more ribald with each posting. Attempts to throw this off on others perceptions is pathetic, irresponsible, vainglorious and lacking good judgment, with you becoming a parody of what you once were.

Re: Some observations

Why don't you guys just PM each other and use the board for constructively? It is sickening to watch this board turn into a he said, she said bickering match. I read the board to learn positive posts about our business. And yes, I do know I can ignore your post and not read them which is what I've had to do the last few days. Come on guys and gals, let's play nice

My God Susan, when are you going to stop worshipping Hugh?
Nowhere in this thread or any thread does Hugh ever directly apologize.
Any feeble attempt at an apology ALWAYS shifts the onus onto the other party.
Read very closely, and you will see that it is always the other persons problem, never Hugh's

jba posted an inappropriate comment that had nothing

to do with the OP - which was pointed out to her.

Her "I was just being "cute" justification is not appropriate either - as her "joke" was a stale - but clearly political - jab at Mr Gore.

At the same time, your input has been utterly devoid of anything relevant to the OP, and plainly mean-spirited to Hugh, apparently only for your own enjoyment.

Your comments to both Hugh and me are true to your usual insulting commentary, and have no place on this board.

Please stop the vitriol you bring with you from JP.

Enough, already.

For those of you, such as Robert, Julie and the ever-vapid bagger, who either cannot or will not read, or who at the very least apparently cannot comprehend what they read, below are some of the comments with which I have addressed my inappropriate posting.

Now, you can continue to ply your personal vendettas by turning Discuss Work into the same sort of cesspool that you have created in Just Politics. Myself, I think you should get on with the business of being signing agents, and direct your bile at your local cable TV network, or the people who are trying to change the formula for Coke once again, or whoever it is who puts the frozen food section in the middle of the store so that as you continue shopping to get to the produce section your ice creams melts, or whatever other target suits your bilious fancy. It has run its course here.

THE NON-APOLOGY APOLOGY

For all those guys and gals who were offended by an over-the-top post that was inadvertently posted in Discuss Work, my apologies. As noted, it should have gone in Leisure, and, on reflection, probably was beyond the margins for even that forum

I have likewise extended my regrets to Harry

Again, to make it clear: The X-rated post did not belong in Discuss Work. It was intended for Leisure. Even it Leisure, it was probably over the top, and I regret that it offended some people

Some of my friends, and of course all my enemies, gave me a well-deserved thumping.

In addition to regretting the original post...

This whole thing, inappropriate as it was...

Now, I realize the above will be inadequate for some die-hards who would complain about a perfect circle because it has no corners, but that's going to be it. You're on your own hereafter: I think any further comments from you are likely to simply underline the conclusion I reached some time ago about you.

Hugh..I did not read the post in question ..I will say that you have been beaten up enough about this! Gee people lighten up! I think Hughs apology is honest and sincere. How long must someone be punished for a post good or bad. There are some people on this board that just will not let sleeping dogs lie..Please either give up the attacks or take it to the PMs..I don't enjoy reading the attacks on one another..Cant we all just get along and move on?

Re: Help! (technical)

Typically, there are two URLs that are used to control a website. The first starts with http://, and is used to do thinks like change the name of the web site, change contact information for the account holder, and cancel service. It does not directly control the content of the website.

The content is typically up/downloaded to/from an address that starts with ftp://. FTP stands for file transfer protocol. Many people use a web writing tool that hides the use of FTP, so you might not have noticed the use of FTP.

Finally, some outfits, like Comcast, have a special website where a "consumer" can use an "easy" web interface to control the content of a personal website, and upload pictures of their pet. Please excuse me while I go vomit.
