Debt settlement
Have any of you done this type of work.? If so, what does it entail and what might be a reasonable fee within a 15 to 20 mile radius.?

Much has been posted here about this subject. Do an Oragne Button search and see what you can find. However, the consenus is that most notaries steer clear of getting involved with this (at least those who post here). I wouldn't touch it with 20 foot pole. Most states, including mine, have clear consumer laws governing debt settlement procedures, most of which are ignored by scum bag debt settlement firms/crooked attorneys/thieves. To be involved in any of this could lead to big headaches.
I know we ICs are always looking for supplementary income, but I have limits, and that includes questionable firms who call notaries because they want the cache of a notary but they don't actually need a notary. These companies just leech off the notary data bases. Maybe some of the settlement pkgs need something notarized (like a LTD POA giving them access to all the client's $$) but many do not. When they call, I tell them to call a cab driver, that they don't need a public official (a CA notary) to do what basically amounts to their dirty work. I would not threaten my commission by getting involved. While you may not be functioning as a notary, that's still why you are there.

Thank you, I had forgotten about the orange button. I looked back all the way to 2010, at the postings. I'm thinking, they aren't getting enough coverage, since they are still looking for notaries.

I agree with GoldGirl/CA. I have gotten a couple of emails this week asking for my services for debt resolution/settlement. When I first started doing Notary work I did 2 of them and I was not comfortable at all. You have to be careful because most of these companies have you, the Notary, sign a form saying that you are their representative which we are not. I don't work for anyone. Generally there are no forms to notarize so why do they call on the notary??? Like many others, as stated, I stay away from these like the plague!

I agree with others. Don't touch this kind of work.
