Looking for input

For years I have been a Yahoo subscriber. I am thinking of changing to another email provider. I wonder if those who have had extensive experience with <both> Yahoo and at least one other provider would mind comparing? Pointing out what features one offers that the other does not would be particularly helpful.

Many thanks.

I use the Windows Live desktop program. It lets me link all

of my e-mail addresses to one place, which makes it very easy to manage. You can still use your Yahoo and any other e-mail address with one easy to use interface.

Re: I use the Windows Live desktop program. It lets me link all

I too use Windows Live. I have AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo, Go Daddy, Comcast, and Gmail. I like Gmail best. Free/large capacity-storage/ability to send large messages (videos)/ easy to use.

I also have windows live but that reall is not an email

program. I have several email addresses also. I do have Yahoo plus. Costs me 20 bucks a year and I pay for it because: it allows me several (i think 5) email addresses all funnelling to one address (if I want). Also can forward my mail to any email address I want. Can control this from anywhere. I have a lot of control with it from anywhere. I think that you can probably do all of this with gmail also. I just don't do it with gmail. Also mail is kept on server until you delete it.

I used to use cable company email but every time I moved I had to change email.

A few reasons I do what I do do do.

I switched my main email to Gmail mainly because it allows for larger attachments when I began having trouble receiving docs from some SS and TC's trying to send docs to my Yahoo account.

I still have my Yahoo account but rarely use it. I don't know if it is just that I have become used to Gmail or if it is actually better, since I made the change several years ago, but I like Gmail and find it easy to use.

I also have my email accounts linked to Outlook with lots of filters so I don't overload my Outlook.

I use both Yahoo and Gmail

Of the two, I prefer Gmail. Both offer pretty much the same features, but I've found Gmail to be a bit more robust, especially when it comes to handling attachments. The other major difference for me has been in the way they handle spam mail - Gmail traps 99% of it, and Yahoo seems to let 99% of it through.

Re: Don't find that Mike but

I have Yahoo Plus also, and that's just been my experience. In fact, it's grown worse in the past two or three months - I've a ton of spam that is slipping through the Yahoo filters, while Gmail still seems to pick off just about everything. This is just recent and I don't understand why it's happening, but it is. They're even missing the obvious stuff, like emails that are dated several days or weeks into the future..

That's interesting

Do you pay the 20 bucks annually? I don't have any problem with attachment size others talk about and wonder if that is why. I never took the time (or maybe I did a couple of years ago when I upgraded) to see what the added benefits are. The thought of changing again doesn't thrill me I will add.

I have Comcast which I use with Outlook. I like having copies of my email on my computer, so I can look up info stored in an email even when I am away from home and don't have web access. To overcome the problem of changing my email address in case I move or change providers, two organizations I belong to provide email reflectors. Email sent to me @ one of those organizations is forwarded to my Comcast address. If I move, I just use the organization's web interface to change the forward-to address.

I agree on Google

I have used Hotmail for years for a personal account (its been hacked a couple of times)

I switched to Gmail a few years ago, and especially like it.

I connected my Gmail account to my Outlook, and I set it up to download everything off of it--which leaves nothing there in case it is hacked. If you're trying to set up a local copy/download and need a hand, let me know. I'll walk you through the settings.

Good luck!

Are you saying I can view all my email accounts from my gmai

account? I have Yahoo and hotmail email accounts and rather than going to each one it would be nice to have all of them at the same place. How do you do that???? Thx!

great, too in gmail.

I am a Google Girl. (Better than a Google Granny, right?)

From my perspective I look for two primary points.

1. Staying power. Is your provider likely to go under anytime soon or during your career such that you will/might have to change your address in too many places and with too many business acquaintances?

2. Branding ability. Always think marketing. Can you get your 'brand' the way YOU want it wherever you decide to go. Having your brand as part of your email is just one more piece of advertising that should not be overlooked.

Personally I choose to 'own' my domain (which I do not believe shows in this forum) and I can use it anywhere with any provider and change providers at anytime without anyone being aware of it. I own multiple domains for my various business activities. My email is always [e-mail address]. Owning a domain is inexpensive (I pay about $11/yr) and a hosting account costs about $6/mo.

If, however, I were going to use one of the free providers, I would probably use Google/GMAIL, and I do have an email address there also for kicks!!
