Regarding hacked email accts
With gmail, you can add a security feature - in addition to your password. You can have a verification code immediately sent to your phone via a text or call. This way, a hacker cannot get beyond the password because the code comes to YOUR phone so unless the scam artist has your phone, they're out of luck.
So here's how it goes: You log into your gmail account as usual but a screen appears with a box to enter a code. Your phone immediately rings (or a text is immediately sent) and you get a six digit code that you enter, THEN you get into your email. May seem like a hassle at first because your phone may be in another room when you're logging into gmail, but you'll get used to having your phone close by to get the code.

Interesting. How does this work with getting to your email ON your Phone?

Set up a gateway passcode for your phone.
My phone will only dial emergency numbers until such time that you've entered the PIN number. Love that feature. After that, my email, Facebook, everything are there waiting for me.

You are not dialing out. Google calls YOU with verification code - will repeat the numbers and then hang up on you. My phone is also password protected - to get IN the phone. But people can call me and I can answer without entering the password.

When you get the call, the voice recites the code and then repeats the code, then it hangs up. Just write it down, then switch back to the email screen and enter the code.
