Greed...no wonder it's one of the Seven

Deadly sins. I caved tonight and accepted more than double my regular fee to go back out after 9 p.m. to do one (for a regular client, even...). I was reluctant and grousing about it. Turns out the borrower isn't fluent in English. Found this out AFTER I had the docs in my possession. Luckily I hadn't printed yet. Then they tried to up the fee by another $50 if they I would complete the signing while they provided an interpreter by phone. I turned it back. Not comfortable with that and way too tired to look up the state statute to see if that's even allowable. They have now called me no less than 8 times, either trying to convince me that the b/o doesn't need an interpreter (I asked him on the phone if he felt that he spoke and read English enough to complete without an interpreter and he said no--he needed one), or other agents from the same SS desperately trying to fill the order. I finally turned off my phone. Dangling that $$$ in front of me almost worked...glad I turned it back, tho...

In CA we are not allowed to use an interpreter or a third party. The law says we must be able to communicate directly with the signer. Sounds like the SS needed to find a notary that spoke the signers language.
