Great question! The faxes are very secure. They are stored exclusively on our enterprise servers and no third-party equipment is used. When you upload a PDF, the file is spooled into memory on our web server and then saved to our fax server, where it is written to disk. There, files are converted to fax format and the job is queued to one of 23 dedicated digital lines to our telco, which happen to be buried and enter our building underground.
With that said, if you'll be using the fax feature, we recommend you use SSL when connecting to our web site (https) so the traffic is encrypted from your machine to ours. If not, the transmission files will be only marginally more secure than e-mail. This means someone at your ISP (or anywhere along the line of traffic) could hypothetically access the information with hacking tools. The same applies to virtually all e-mail (as few people use secure approaches for e-mail) and standard web-browsing.
