anyone get email from Signature Closers?
about background screening done by Secure Settlements? Do you think this is necessary--esp. CA notaries?

Yep. See below for my inquiry & their response.
Here's their response:
This was an optional value-added benefit we are promoting. Don't have to do it.

California notaries go thru a bgc as a condition of being commissioned. Besides that FBO & DOJ bgc, I also have another. Are you suggesting ANOTHER? Is every company going to require their own individual bgc?

End? When we lobby to have NR's accepted by all.
Instead of that nat'l for-profit org. who wants us to join and join and join...just so we can have their much-promoted (pushed) bgc.

Hi all and sorry for the confusion on this offering!
(Claudine- P.S. I had to personally go through 250+ replies in my email and tried to answer them all. I apologize for my delay. I saw your email from Thursday and replied this morning).
Our intention here is not to MANDATE a specific background check. I recognize this is cost prohibitive to most signing agents and a great waste of resources. I personally would advocate for one generally accepted standardized background screening and vetting process nationally. I also feel the same way about training. We need a standardized training program nationally (to include state specific items for signing agents).
We have recently been approached by many of our national title companies that are mandating we assign notary signing agents to their files that have a documented background check on file with us starting in January. We are also finding many of the largest companies are advocating Secure Settlements, Inc. to become that standardized center for "vetting" as they call it and eventually training / credentials as I mentioned above.
We do not have any preference currently on which service you use for your background screening (Lexis Nexis / Equifax / NNA / Secure Settlements) and will accept any background check as long as it has a criminal check.
That being said, we went out of our way to try to negotiate a value added benefit ($59 cost versus $99 cost and we didn't mark it up a penny despite all of the extra work- see 250+ emails and more- that this has and will create for us). We felt this was worthwhile because we see the trend towards Secure Settlements becoming the vendor requirement of many large national signing and title companies and felt that having the ability to offer this service at a $59 cost versus $99 cost to our signing agents would be viewed positively and appreciated overall. And many signing agents were very appreciative of this.
I definitely did not expect all of the negativity around people thinking we want to force them into a background check by our vendor. Certainly not true and I apologize for instilling that concern.
Keep up the good work all. We appreciate you!
-Mark

My NotRot BGC includes criminal check.
So, okay, I've added it to my profile with Signature Closers and, per Mark's posting above, all should be good.
