Alabama Notaries - New Bond Requirements

It just came to my attention that Alabama now requires a $25k Surety Bond For Commsioned Notaries. It had been $10k. This change became effective in 2011 and was announced at the SOS Notary Conference. Since I did not attend the conference I didn't hear about it; and nor do I remember getting any notification in the mail. Did you?

I recently renewed my AL Commision and the insurance agent hadn't heard of the increase in bond amount so I was sold one for $10k. When I took the bond to the Probate Judges' office they accepted and recorded it w/o any problem. SMH.

I just bought a new bond here on NotRot so now I'm fine but you might want to double check your documents.

BTW, kudos to the NotRot Member (FlaNotary2) who posted about this last year. I know we Alabama Notaries are a quiet bunch (with me being the exception) but we really need to share what we hear and know with one another, especially in this forum.

Last but not least, the SOS posted PowerPoint slides from the 2011 Conference presentation. There's some very good information out there including the change in bond amount. I'll post links to that and the AG's ruling later.

The better part of the deal is $5 vs. .50 per notarization

and no journal required.

Re: The better part of the deal is $5 vs. .50 per notarization

I've heard of the changes, but have not seen in writing from SOS (or anyone else in Alabama), except Micehlle and Jim. I knew about the $25,000 requirement, long before the insurance agent did, so I got the of $10,000 one upon renewing in August of last year, and then got the $25,000 version from NotRot in August of this year. Got a 3-year policy to coincide with the remaining three years of my commission period. My name shows up in the SOS's list of Notaries Public, but I've never gotten an email from there, after 17 years! Tried to rectify that 2 years ago, through the SOS and local Judge of Probate, to no avail.......... Roll Tide, ya'll.

Link to Senate Bill 54 Re: 2011 Changes

I'm not real good at posting links. I'm still trying to find the exact website but I did find the Bill.

If this link doesn't work for you, and you're an Alabama Notary reading this, just send me an email and I send you the PDF version.

Some of the best information I've seen to date on the roles and responsibilities of Alabama Notaries.

Oops! My bad.

The 2010 presentation was actually from ASN, not Attorney General. Still good basic information for new notaries. Remember, up until now we've had practically nothing.
