Came home to a surprise... (a vent...)
Got docs for a 9:00 am appointment tomorrow morning just as I was leaving this evening. Saw two emails with attachments and left. I just got back home and went to print docs and whadda ya know... In addition to the 101 pages of lender docs (no big deal....), there are 73 pages of escrow docs!!! This includes 2 copies of a Preliminary Title Report (all of which need to be initialed), 3 copies of a practically illegible "Arms Length Transaction" form each of which needs to be notarized (with wrong verbiage, of course), more than 10 pages of Bylaws for the HOA, plus several other docs to be notarized.
Gee, don't you think it would have been nice for someone to let me know this? This is going to take lots more time than I had planned - to say nothing of the extra printing - so there's no way the agreed upon fee covers this. (I wasn't even told it was a purchase. For local properties, that's not much of a big deal, but this one is out-of-state.) And of course, the ss - one I haven't worked for very often - isn't reachable. Their ratings are mostly 4 stars, with a smattering of 1 stars thrown in here and there, so I have no idea if they'll be willing to step up re: the fee.
I was planning on printing everything tonight, but guess I'm going to be getting up a lot earlier than I had planned tomorrow morning... Hopefully I'll be able to reach someone early enough to get this resolved.
I hate it when this kind of thing happens! I can only think of one possible outcome (i.e. a fee increase - and I don't know what the odds are for that to happen) that doesn't end with me either being screwed or being made out to be the bad guy... Oh, did I mention that they want this done in time for the borrower to make a wire transfer before 11:00 am? I'm hoping this situation will become just a minor inconvenience that we manage to deal with while we cement a better working relationship.
(In all fairness to the ss, they very well may not have realized the size of the package, either. If that's the case, I hope they request a fee adjustment from the tc.)

I'm with you.
When I started 12 years ago, the average loan was 50 pages. It took a half hour to sign, if you went slowly. Now it's always over 100 pages. Twice the time, twice the ink, twice the paper, and quadruple the gas. But am I getting paid twice what I used to make? No: I made the same and I am grateful that they even call me.
It's no skin off Title's nose: They just forward the emails and let us deal with the all the extra printing and dealing with the borrowers.

Re: I'm with you.
I always ask the scheduler how many pages are in the package? This is something I learned because I had to print extra pages that no one told me. aahhh....so annoying. Once, some escrow company called me but I canceled because they told me we don't pay the notaries anything if the borrower does not sign. All I really wanted is a print fee which they refused to agree to accept. I rejected the assignment. One thing that drives me crazy is that when a notary makes an error, it is like they want to burn us at the stake, but when escrow makes an error, oh well things just happen.

Re: I'm with you.
Right. I just double checked and docs were sent directly to me from title, so ss probably had no idea. I hope we can work something out on this. I've run into this type of a situation before with more than one good signing service and it was a non-issue. Fee was adjusted and we moved on. But it could end up messing with my schedule for the whole day. (Seems this stuff only happens when we're pretty booked up.)
I think what really frustrated me about this is that I wanted to get everything printed and prepped tonight. I hate leaving things to the last minute because you never know what's going to happen. (And I'm not a morning person, so I'm not at my best then anyway.) Oh well, guess I'll just try to get a good night's sleep...

Re: I'm with you.
You are so correct. Packages were far smaller when I first began in 2004. I notice every year, docs gets larger and larger and the majority of the docs are PIA docs to cover the butts of the signing/title company which have little to nothing to do with the loan itself.

Sounds like a Landamerica file....I would definitely negotiate this one, Janet...
Lucks of Luck doing so.
