I agree with Lee also. Send me the check.

Sure direct deposit is great, but not for a fee. My bank allows scanning or taking photos for a deposit. It's easy and convenient. No bank visits.

I wouldn't allow direct deposit...

Are you speaking of having a company directly deposit your payment to your account? If so, I would never allow it - not sharing my financial institution and account numbers! I would have them pay by credit card on my SQUARE which will directly deposit the money into my account, or send me the check!

Re: I wouldn't allow direct deposit...

You realize that when you cash their checks you're sharing your account information with them anyway?

That said, that's what having a separate business checking account is good for, as well.

Also, I'd never pay for direct deposit, either. What a joke. They are just trying to pass on THEIR fees to you. Having DD is a convenience for them and a cost savings to THEM...and yet they don't want to be stuck paying the bank fees and pass that on to you? Not cool.

Re: I wouldn't allow direct deposit...

You can avoid sharing the account number by taking the check to the bank in person, endorsing it with just your signature, and depositing or cashing it. They'll still find out which bank you did business with. Most of us wouldn't find it worth the trouble for most outfits we deal with, but I suppose if it was a really questionable customer, it might be worth it.

I don't know where you bank or how your banking works in VT, but here in FL (and it was the same in CT) - if I go to my bank to cash a check OR deposit a check my account number has to be on the back of the check - and if I want to cash it I have to have sufficient funds in MY account to cover the check. The only way to avoid any of this is to take the check to THEIR bank and cash it.

Maybe different in VT.

BTW, I have no problem with direct deposit - but I, too, would not pay them a fee to do it. If I have to pay the fee then my signing fee is increased to cover it.

It would depend on the amount of the fee.

And, other factors.

Sometimes a fee to keep me out of line or running errands is worth it.
