Elderly signings with no valid ID
Just had a call to do a POA signing with attorney & witnesses @ customers home. I reminded son to have her goverment id available when I got there this sat. He said oh, she hasn't driven in years. She's 81 and has parkinsons. She has bills and mail to prove who she is....i can probably find an old id somewhere.... Just curious, anyone else have this happen?

Yes, all the time. I've been working with the state legislature to come up with a solution to helping people in this situation be able to have some form of ID, but so far it's not been productive.
According to the SOS office, we are to obtain current ID from all signers of documents, however the statute does not specify what is acceptable, only that the notary be satisfied as to the signer's identity. I use my best discretion if an outdated ID is presented.

Witness has to be known by both the signer and notary in IL

THe other thing to consider is the Parkinson's. While not everyone with Parkinson's has the dementia, one you're aware of it, you should probably proceed with caution.

Parkinson's is especially cruel because it affects motor skills, but may not affect mental capacity at all - just a person's ability to communicate. Every situation will be different, of course, but I agree that caution needs to be taken - for or against accepting the assignment.

ID must be current to be valid source in my state. Does your
state offer a non-driver ID card? looks just like driver license. I wouldn't notarize without something current, unless as others have suggested, you are able to find credible witness. Maybe your state allows for something different?

yes. it offers free id cards for 65+ with no expiration The son keeps emailing me to say she is of sound mind, but her motor skills/speech are bad. He said they take her to church ~( so in my mind they could make a stop @ the DMV.) The attorney emailed to see what i will accept if she doesn't have any current id's.... hmmmm i don't think i'll be taking this one!

Neither of my grandmothers nor my late mother-in-law drove, yet they maintained current state ID cards. In CA, there's no excuse for a senior to be without current ID because the state ID card is FREEEEE to seniors 62+ and valid for 10 years. The regular state ID card is valid for 6 years.
Yes, it may be a headache getting the elderly person to the DMV but with an appointment, it's ONE headache in TEN years.

Exactly!! I tell seniors all the time to get themselves to the DMV for an ID card. Many of them don't seem to realize they can do that, or that it's free....they just have to get themselves to the DMV once every 10 years.

CA DMV might still have this program to come to homebound
people to help them get a state ID.

Re: CA DMV might still have this program to come to homebound
Oklahoma also has a state non-driver ID available for free and non-expiring. The problem most people cite to me is that they "can't get to the DMV." I'm trying to get the legislature to find a way to provide the service to those who are homebound just for this reason.
Does any state have this service currently? If so, please let me know so I can reference it in my comments to the legislators.

Illinois provides a free ID card to those 65+ with NO
expiration. In other words, the card does not expire until you do.
