Hint for newbies and oldies
If you're going on vacation call your big clients and talk to vendor relations or who handles the files for notaries and let them know the days you will be away (not for 1-2 days) I will be gone for a 9 days and don't want anything held against me.
In today's climate you don't answer the phone enough you get wiped out. I will call back a couple days before I get back and activate me again so I can have orders ready when I get back.

Nothing will be held against you if you're "booked". I would just answer my phone and say, "My schedule is booked during that time......the next available appt in my schedule is on X day at X time."

Yeah but who wants to keep answering your phone when you are on vacation? I want to be cell phone free when I go!!
I like the idea of notifying the SS. and will do so in future. Thanks for the thought.!

I notify a few, but the majority are informed by my voice mail message which says something like this: "This is Jack. I'll not be available to conduct closings until October XX. Feel free to leave me a message now or call back a day or so before then concerning any opportunities on that day or afterward." With that said, I turn off the phone, and then check it once in the evening or early morning. Did it that way for a 15 day period last year. After about 12 days, I kept the phone on, just in case there were any jobs available for the first day or so after my return. As far as I could tell, the process worked well. As soon as I returned, I got calls, as usual.

However, I tried it this past summer and am not sure that
I would ever do it again. I get calls for closings a week in advance, so for the week I'm on vacation and they're not calling me, I'm missing out on the closings for the week I'm coming back.
I don't mind answering the phone anyway. I love getting calls from the companies I work with. It makes me feel loved (and of course I share the love right back...lol).
I do like Lisa says when I don't feel like working anyway, "thank you so much for considering me, but I'm not available for that one."
