How to start
Like many I need to start bringing some funds in to supplement my retirement (Social Security). I'm bombarded with e-mails and ads and things that say do this and do that.
Can someone please give me a simple "how to get started" lesson???

do you mean to become a notary? If so check with your department of state for your states requirements.

Search here for "newbie" - there are a lot of other threads that give great advice but the numbers escape me at the moment. 33325 is a classic, some of it outdated but the basic premises still hold and it's been added to over the years.
Careful on your SS - you're limited on how much you can earn

Regarding SS.
If your spouse is retired, make him/her your partner. Now you can double your earnings with no poblem from SS.
