Printers with dual trays

Does anyone know how to set the printer so that it will print a document that has legal and letter size in it?
I have an HP 8600.

I also have the HP 8600 and I have not found a way to do that yet with this printer. It's not to big a deal since I don't and shouldn't use the HP for docs. But if anyone has figured this out I would also like to know the answer.

Isn't that an inkjet printer? As far as I know, we are only supposed to use Laser printers. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I can't tell you how many times I have gone to the HP website to find the answer. I have searched and searched and read the manual front to back and I still don't find an answer. If you know, please post link. That would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, this is a thermal inkjet printer..

And if you're talking about printing loan documents on two different sizes of paper, you need to retire this particular printer to using it strictly for faxing only (and possible personal use) and invest in a laser printer, which is required for loan docs. Thermal inkjet may be a better quality print but it's not laser, and that's what you need.

Everything you've heard here about using this printer for printing your docs is correct, of course. If you still want to set up the dual trays for other use, you should be able to go to the Printers and Devices. Open the printer (icon) and under Device Settings you will be able enable/assign the trays. This way the printer will know additional trays are there and what size the paper is. I don't know about your printer specifically but that is typically HP... Otherwise "google" your question. I find that an easier way to get an answer sometimes than going to the HP site. Good luck.

I have spent hours on the phone and web. The 8600 will not/cannot auto select paper for a doc with multiple paper sizes. I ended up returning mine. What where they thinking? HP failed this one. Big time.

I found this:

The HP8600 cannot be set up to autosense the paper. It cannot select legal/letter in one document. It can however be set up to recognize legal in one tray and letter in another. This would enable you to output without changing paper but not to output a job with legal/letter in the job automatically sensing the difference. Hope that helps.

Re: I found this:

If any company realizes you are using ink jet instead of laser to print docs, you probably will not receive any more work from them. Wouldn't that be really expensive anyways? Even if we were able to use them?

When I first started out, I was told laser is required because laser toner can not be altered as inkjet ink can. I have no idea how, but that is what I was told.

She may however wish to use it for other things and utilize the two trays. Do you agree?

Re: I found this:

I agree that she should keep this printer for other uses..Maybe to print the Bos copies on. She should get a laser printer for loan documents..I was told years ago that laser was a requirement..There are so many places to get laser printers now and some older refurbished ones too..doesnt have to cost a lot either.

Re: I found this:

Thanks. I think you guys are right. I have tried everything and it won't recognize the different sizes. Oh well, it's good for scanning and faxing. Laser died, shopping for a new one. Any suggestions??
