In 2011, Google announced that it would start dropping support for Gmail on "obsolete" browsers. Their definition of "obsolete" is anything older than the last two versions, so when IE9 was released they dropped support for IE7. Now that IE10 is released, if they are consistent, they will drop support for IE8 - which means you would have to upgrade to Windows 7 in order to use Gmail with Internet Explorer as your web browser. However, I haven't seen anything definite about dropping IE8 yet, so I'm curious where you got your information.
They will still support the latest versions of Firefox, Chrome, and Opera, which (as far as I know) don't care if you use XP or Win 7, so if they DO drop support the solution is to simply change the browser you use for Gmail to one that isn't tied to the Operating System. Both Firefox and Opera are better than IE8 anyway...
