I know it's not a new trend but

I feel like I was just fished out of the water and then dumped right back in.

Do notaries actually take their computers to bed with them and throughout the night wait for them to ping an emailed assignment, and then confirm the offer in the middle of the night if everything seems right in the email.

The email I received (according to my computer) didn't come in till after 9PM last night and I was up at 6AM this morning responding back that since they would be meeting my fee I would like a call back to confirm the appointment. I also called and had to leave a message for the sender of the email. This is good company to work for according to SC so I wanted to work for them.
So almost 3 hours later I get a response to my email from them saying that they just got into the office and that the assignment had already been assigned.
OK so I sound now like I am ranting but is this way of the future? Do I really need to take my computer to bed with me and work all through the night in order to get decent closing fee's and work?

Re: I've had the same thing happen.....

I have my phone with me and when a message comes in it takes a few seconds to look over it and respond. I know for some this seems like working all the time, but I learned from a great mentor that if you own your business you are working anyway and to take a few second to answer the phone is the price you pay for the freedom you enjoy. He told me if I want to work a set schedule that I should come and work for him, other wise "deal with it".
This was not meant to put anyone down for their choices and it is your business, run it anyway you want. Just imparting some wisdom from a mentor that has served me well over the years.

Did we have the same mentor? 2 rings - always

answer...24/7, truly.

ok - sometimes goal not met recently - usually I'm on another call. Hard to interrupt negotiation to grab a friend or someone not offering money though.

I sure don't, however I am usually up til 1 am, so I can accept signings until that time, then I am usually back up about 7. And I always check my emails right before bed.

I dont take my laptop to bed and wait for an email to come through. I dont go to sleep till about 1-2am anyways. So Im up facebooking or tweeting so when something comes in via email or text I can respond.

Im a night owl anyways due to working night shift for years. I did have an email come in one day at 11pm but I was out at the time. When I got home around 1130 I responded and in the morning they responded back around 10am saying it was already assigned. No biggie for me.

Thank you all for your thoughts
No I don't think I will be taking my computer or phone to bed with me but thanks anyway.
This company is in NY so we are on the same time frame.
I did let them know that I usually don't take work from emails because in the past, everytime I sent them a response they said the same thing that the job was assigned. I am just trying to get these people to make their offers over the phone so we can confirm immediatly, especially if they are already upfront about meeting the fee that I request.
Thanks again

I don't do it..and won't

my phone and puter are shut off for the night (cell forwarded to house phone). Also don't - and won't - take my phone into the bathroom or shower with me..

There are limits...IMHO

Re: I don't do it..and won't

I sort of feel, if they cannot call me on the phone, the same is true if there is a payment issue, no one to talk to. I have my phone as primary contact.

Re: I don't do it..and won't

I have one company I do a lot of signings for, They always send the email, but literally the same minute, or the next minute. They always call me and ask me if I am available. I think they hit send then call me. lol.

I have a couple I accept emails from, but those are long standing relationships and we already have a fee agreement. Usually the email just asks if I can handle one in my area over the next couple of days and it's left up to me to schedule. They're not shopping it around, just want to know if I'll be able to do it so they can o/nite the docs to me.

I'll take as many of those as I can get! The ones that are a feeding frenzy that go the the fastest one to respond aren't companies I'm really interested in working for.
