Simple GNW appt almost goes south
and boy did I sorely underprice this one..but who knew? Guess my crystal ball is on strike.
Call tonight at 7:45 - "my granddaughter needs something notarized for school and needs it tonight! "
"Okay...who's signing"; Answer - "my daughter, her mother". Get their location...quite a distance
I say "Okay...if you meet me half way I can help (I still travel 18 mi rt) - I tell grandma her mother needs to have current valid ID" - she says okay, she has that. We set signing location and I quote $25; Drag hubby with me cuz we're signing in the parking lot of a convenience store near the interstate (and I MEAN drag - opening night football game on tonight)
They're 25 minutes late; finally show up. First thing Mom hits me with is "can you change a hundred?" - Um, no, so she sends son into store to get change; Then we proceed to ID - Mom does NOT have her ID - has her social security card - "is that good enough?" - No, say I, I cannot accept that; Mom then says "well, I have her learner's ID" - well, she's not signing, so no...and by the way, did he (the son with the hundred) come back yet? "Oh, yeah - they wouldn't change it" (no surprise there)
Thank heavens stepdad was sitting behind the wheel - Stepdad was willing to sign, had valid ID AND the $25 to pay me - mission accomplished!!

Doesn't sound like fun, Linda. I've gotten a lot of calls
this past week for all the school stuff, too. Kids living with grandparents & need to register for school at that address, religious exemptions from immunizations, etc. I try to refer them to the nearest location where they can walk in for notary services.

<<< I tell grandma her mother needs to have current valid ID"...... Mom does NOT have her ID - has her social security card - >>>
I ran into that problem a while back so lately I've been asking callers, "Do you (or does so-and-so) have a current driver's license, state ID card or passport?" I stop asking people if they have current ID as their interpretation of ID may be a library card or gym membership.
