The toner itself? I was cleaning today and
found a cabinet full of old toner and cartridges. Was thinking I might make a bit of change on the carts....but toner too? Thanks.

If you're talking about the actual bottles of toner vs. used cartridges, at least here in CA, there are recycling centers scattered about for items that are classified as "hazardous materials", which includes things like dead batteries, old paint cans, unused medications, old electronics items, etc. - and toner. If you Google "hazardous materials recycling", you'll probably find some info. This keeps that kind of stuff out of land fills and prevents it from eventually seeping into ground water or washing out to the ocean.
Are you in a major metropolitan area? I wonder if more rural areas or - other states - have similar recycling efforts.

It's illegal to put them in the trash in IL. Our town has a recycling day for electronics etc etc. I save them up till then.

Thanks Janet. I'm in the bay area. I like the idea of returning to staples for a few bucks.

Refill em and keep using them, why buy a new one?

This might be an airhead thing to ask, but how do you refill the old cartridges? I have a new brother 5470, that takes tn 750 high yield toner.

That one does not have a refill kit.... Yet.... but just Google Toner refill kits. Most come with instructions. Very easy

In my experience with refilling toner cartridges (for an HP printer), they were only good for about 3-4 refills before there started to be problems with smudges, streaks and/or spots. When they're refurbished, the drums (which are on the cartridge for HP printers) are replaced, etc. Don't know about Brother cartridges.
With my old printer, once a refilled cartridge started presenting problems, I recycled it and bought a new one. The cartridges for the printer I use now have such a high capacity - and the relative print cost is so inexpensive by comparison - that I felt it wasn't worth the time and hassle to refill anymore. But that's just me.

Janet's experience, as in 3-4 refills, is all I would do when I was refilling also. I didn't want/need to push my luck on probs at EOM. ( You know gremlins ALWAYS wait until then! ) If you decine to refill, I suggest outside, non windy day, or in garage. It is relatively easy, but it can be messy if you make a mistake. Use newspaper on picnic table, etc. Use search, there are other tips on here. If it hasn't already, refill kits for 5470 shoud show up soon, or contact Tonerkits.com.

I give them to the school my kids attend. They are able
to earn money from them for school supplies.

Target and Best Buy have recycle bins in the front
As soon you walk in the door, there are bins for cycling just about everything, including batteries and toner cartridges. Staples gives you a coupon to recycle toner or adds it to your rewards card account. You don't get cash back.
I also have a Brother printer - if you have no experience with refilling toner cartridges, I wouldn't do it. I buy from Provantage.com. I have not found a better price than they have - even Amazon or New Egg cannot beat Provantage.com, at least for the cartridges I buy. And usually, the shipping is free and I buy NEW Brother brand cartridges to protect the warranty.

Thanks. I'll try provantage.com. I was about to buy a refurbished toner from inkground.com Any thoughts?

Sure, we all have lots of thoughts. One thing that
is best above all others: use the orange search button. If there has been one post, there have been hundreds about toner - refilling your own, buying off brands, who to buy from and who gives the best deals, etc. There is so much information here that you only have to be faintly interested to find it.
I always suggest you do a search - spend 30 mins when you need/want something just looking to see what others may be doing and recommending. You will not regret it.
Added benefit: you learn a lot.

Re: Target and Best Buy have recycle bins in the front
Personally, I would not buy anything refurbished for a NEW printer. I'm willing to spend the money to buy new, brand name cartridges for my equipment. Others do well and have good luck refilling their own toner cartridges, or buying refurbished ones.
This is just ME, but I don't buy "slightly used", floor model, returns, open package, or refurbished electronics of any kind - regardless of the offer of a full warranty. Must be brand spanking new and the box cannot look like it was dropped at all - cannot be too dented or caved in. If I'm in the store, and somebody is breathing all over the box or staring at it too long, I grab the 2nd box behind that one (LOL, silly me). Okay, we all have our pet peeves, and that's ONE of mine.
