Many of us have purchased a good refurb from eBay (or similar) and ended up with a printer worth far more than that for far less. If you go that route, you probably want to make sure the technology isn't too old so it will be compatible with newer equipment, as you inevitably upgrade. You also should carefully research the seller before making a decision. A month or so back, there was a recommendation posted for someone thought to be a very reliable source and several people bought from him. (I don't remember the details, but someone else probably will.)
Some people prefer to buy brand new equipment, others prefer to buy not quite latest technology of a high quality item that's been gently used. Personally, if I can find a good source for something that fits my needs, I'm in the latter group, when it comes to printers. You'll also find some who favor Brother and others of us who are HP devotees. Use the orange search button and you'll find lots of info, some of it fairly recent.

I like Brother printers and have used them exclusively since 2000. My current model is no longer sold, and I probably won't update for quite some time.
Other owners here rave about HL-5470DWT and the HL-6180DWT. If I were to have to replace now, I would go with the 6180, simply because it takes a full ream of paper in the tray. Both are fast, a great plus.

Another reason I like Brother: when I call them, they answer. They walk me through whatever it is and then send me an email of our session so that if the same thing happens again, I can refer to it easily. They have set up, via phone, my last 2 printers out of the box to fully working for my needs. That alone is worth a lot to me as I just don't care to retain all the tech stuff anymore and the wireless stuff escapes me.

I just bought the Brother 5470DWT and am thrilled with it. Got it on Quill.com for $249 brand new... What a difference a good dual drawer printer makes!

I just bought a HP 4300dtn on ebay for $200
In all fairness I have to admit I'm a HP fan. Had my computer guy come in and set it up for me (we had 4 computers needing access) - I absolutely love it. The seller on e-bay was e-link international - initially I had a print quality issue and, in addition to ordering another toner cartridge, I contacted them - they were very responsive and supportive.
I would definitely go the e-bay route if you're looking to save some pennies but as others have said - research the seller. I also had a bad experience with a scanner on ebay. This dealer that I just bought with has my full support.
Good luck.

Re: I just bought a HP 4300dtn on ebay for $200
Sometimes I've gotten a good buy. But for printers, I won't go that route again.
I purchased an All-in-One, because was color and I wanted the fax/scanner. What I didn't realize until months later, is that the inner mechanisms were getting worn, which impacted the output on the receiver's end.
Purchased a new remanufactured one, and discovered the unit won't work unless both ink wells are installed (EVEN if just trying to fax or scan!) and not trying to copy or print. Called manufacturer and they said talk to the Seller (CompUSA). Yes - I returned it.
So now I'll buy used if I need something to keep in the vehicle for an emergency.

When buying an HP, some things to look at are page count and
how much of the maintenance kit is left.

I get toner from tonerpirate.com.
I also buy the extended warranty on printers.
Hope this helps.

just got in March at Brother MFC8950DWT...comes dual try so not need to purchase a second comes all in one box. Price on Amazon was $636.99 and as a prime member shipping was free which was a good thing as it weighed in at about 45 pounds with all the packing material. Is a scanner, printer, fax and copier....I AM LOVING IT. I have a single tray HP 3390 that I tried to sell with 2 toners (*one installed but only used for about 800 pages and good for at least 5000 more) and a new unopened one. This is still available if anybody wants for $100. I had a need to purchase a new laptop and the 3390 was NOT compatible for the scanner software which is a necessity in this day and age. After doing my research I purchased the 8950DWT which also is a wireless printer so I do not have to be connected to print which is handy.
