Duly commissioned notaries

Do you have two journals for each state you are commissioned in OR do you use the same journal for all notarizations no matter the state?

I'm only commissioned in one state, but I would keep separate journals. The two states are likely to have different access requirements for the journals, and if they aren't different now, they might be in the future. Imagine I started spending winters in Vermont and summers in California, and was commissioned in both states. Suppose I kept one journal. So a Vermonter is entitled to come visit me and inspect in person the journal, because it is a public record. But that Vermonter isn't entitled to see the CA entries because he would have to submit a written request for each entry he wishes to get a copy of for that state. What a mess.

As far as CA is concerned, you could only pick one state.

That would be where your primary residence is located.

Well I'm not concerned with California, I'd never get commissioned there. But VA we don't have journal requirements. Not even neccesary to have one but I do just for liability issues. But I do see a reason to have separate journals for different states.

ToniK, I'm curious, why would you never get commissioned

in CA?

Have you seen all these extensive discussions on California's notary law? I love my states KISS method!!

I am commissioned in both PA and NJ and I have two separate journals. Requirements are different and there are different notary acts. Further, in PA, if I resign my commission, I need to have the journals delivered to the Recorder of Deeds in the county where I am commissioned. Don't want to muddy the waters with NJ notary acts.

This is not a true statement:

But that Vermonter isn't entitled to see the CA entries because he would have to submit a written request for each entry he wishes to get a copy of for that state.

I am commissioned in three states. I have separate notary bags for each state with separate journals also. If I ever quit, I will need to turn my journals into the appropriate state for each. Also, It is a lot easier to just grab my bag and have the right seal, etc when heading out the door. (It would not be very wise to accidentally seal a closing done in Minnesota with an Iowa seal, for instance.)
