I just don't get it

I hate to be negative (who, me?) .... but it's so sad... not to mention frustrating... to see so many NR members taking jobs from known nonpayers. One of the great advantages of NR membership is access to SC where just a glance would send any self-respecting SA screaming the other direction from, for example, DMN Business Solutions and Premier Signing Services. Yet just this weekend NR members have admitted working for these outfits and complaining about nonpayment (duh!) for jobs.

Why wouldn't NR members look these guys up and just say no? I know there are plenty of notaries who don't know any better because they have no knowledge of NR, have a naive expectation that they will get paid for their services, or whatever. I also realize there are plenty of NRers who regularly take pathetic fees and don't care what other notaries think. But that aside, why would any NRer ever take jobs from known nonpayers?
Do they think they're immune from anything bad ever happening to them? Do they think the good fairy will wave her magic wand over them while giving the finger to hundreds of other notaries? Do they think they're special? Do they even think? Are they insanely optimistic and hopeful by nature? Desperate for anything?

I realize this is a neverending saga and that the two no-payers mentioned are just the tip of the iceberg. Still it's very baffling.

I wonder the same thing, GoldGirl. Why on earth would someone even talk to these companies.

Might as well go to Las Vegas and through your money at the tables.

Right you are, GoldGirl. I got a call from one on Friday that I'd not heard from in about two years. I said "I thought you guys were out of business!" She said, "no, we're going strong." Meanwhile, I was looking up the postings in NotRot. When I asked her if she was familiar with the unfavorable postings there, she said "yes, but those were a few years ago, and we're good, now." I said, "funny, the most recent six comments are from this year (including this month), and all are far less than favorable. Thanks, but I'll forego the opportunity to participate."

You may have hit on something, Jack. You stood up for yourself, you were proactive, you engaged with them, and you politely declined. Many people are too timid to stand up against the bad guys; they hate any hint of confrontation. Many can't get it in their heads that SSs are not "employers," that we don't have to take whatever they hand out. They may think that just because some "authority figure" calls, we have to accept. It can't be out of ignorance that NR members take these jobs.

Of course, most people would rather forgo confrontation. But to cling to the belief that somehow you'll get paid when no one else is, is no way to run a business (unless you're the business cheating notaries. Then you've hit a gold mine).

We all know that some signing services pay at least 30 days going forward. Some pay in 45 business days, that's almost two months out.

Given these payment schedules, why would any one agree to 1) work for less than market fee; 2) be paid two months down the road or 3) risk working for a company that might not be in business in two months and not get paid at all.

Want explanation why we can't get paid for 30-45+ days, especially from title companies. Following up on receivables only add to time spent = less profit.

It's actually pretty simple... they have no business sense or training. The do NOT know what it means to run a business. They approach this work with an employee mentality and have zero clue how to price their services to account for expenses and profit margin in order to make a living.

It's been my experience that a lot of the notaries who take the lower fees are gone within a year or two, even less, because they burn out and reality (and/or the IRS) hits them.

I've learned to not let them bother me. The companies that hire them would never meet my fees anyway.

Thanks all, but ....

I wasn't really asking about why notaries take low fees or wait forever to get paid or any of the other common problems we face. I'm asking why NR notaries take job after job from agencies that do not pay .... when a look at SC would clearly inform them who they're dealing with.

It's unrealistic to expect any of these NSAs (many of whom who have posted their no-pay experiences working for outfits that they would have known do not pay if they had only looked at SC) to explain their thinking, so I was hoping some brilliant mind might have an idea.

As in:
Ring ring
Hello, notary here
Hi, this is No pay SS (just look us up in SC). We have signing in your area. Will you help us out?
OK, I'd love to. Thank you.

Months and month later (after having taken several more from same no pay SS)
Whine Whine Whine on NR

Just don't get it.

Re: Thanks all, but ....

Right! Or help them stay in business by getting them to pay in advance via PayPal. That kind of an approach is bordering on a Ponzi scheme because, in effect, they're using proceeds from someone else's signing to pay for one that hasn't been done yet. I don't want any part of that.

Aaah Duh, HUH? Wha....'Cause I was Driving and could check S/C? Naw, cause I know it's against the law to talk on the phone and drive (with hand held device).

Easy answer: They are doing this for the good of SC

Very altruistic people who take these low/no pay jobs so they can keep SC current for us???
It's a tough job but somebody has to do it. And I thank them for keeping me profitable.

This has been happening

for longer than the 9 years I have been reading this forum. I don't know why we are all surprised.

There are innumerable comments on non-payers, low-payers and take a loong time to pay payers, and yet people still come in an complain about them. How many times have we had someone tell us that they are taking all the jobs they can get from SOX because "they promised to pay me", and then 60 days later come online an cry that they haven't been paid?

And we are suprised at this? Not me, there are those who will never get it and keep doing the same dumb things over and over again.

There has been complaint after complaint about NSA's taking low-ball fees - for the nine years I have been reading this forum. Again, we are surprised at this?

People are people and are not going to change. Those who have a good head for business will thrive and those who have the employee mindset will not last long in this business.

If can't check when take call I check later and turn it back

I LOVE to copy and paste all the negative reviews in my reply to their confirmation, for which I change the Subject to begin with "Please find another Notary." Then I reply in the body of the email that I can't accept the assignment, because I looked them up on NotaryRotary.com and found the following reviews, which I feel might be helpful for them to see.

It makes me feel good. lol.
